Have you guys given up on the Nvidia Shield?

It doesn’t work, this is a fact.
I’ll exclude detailing the months of my life that I’ve wasted on troubleshooting this, and run with…
I’ve just factory reset the Shield Pro 2019. Very first thing after reset, update both Plex apps, create PMS, the PMS does not work. It is stopped, it is not broadcasting, it is broken.
Reset Shield Pro 2019 again, leave the Plex apps as the OLD versions bundled in with Shield OS, create PMS, it works.
Update the apps, it breaks.
Come on for gods sake this hasn’t worked in the 7 months since I owned this Shield. This is completely unusable.

And as an update, it actually doesn’t even work if you leave the apps as the old versions.
Sure, PMS is running which is a rare sight on the Shield, but it isn’t broadcasting.
If I log into http://ip.address.of.shield:32400/web - I get the infuriatingly inappropriate “no soup for you” error page which you guys seriously need to rethink, you probably thought this was a sense of humour thing but consider how up the wall with anger some people are by the time they hit this.
I’m logged in using regular email authentication to the PMS, the account has been linked, I’ve only ever had one Plex account ever, and it’s saying my account isn’t authorised to view the PMS even though it’s all done and setup using that email address.
Do you guys make this software as a part time thing around a day job? Or is this your full time gig?

I’ve had my NVidia Shield for two weeks and have enjoyed it immensely. The only thing I use it for is Plex. The only thing I’ve noticed as a negative so far is that I can’t copy movies from my PC to the external hard drive plugged into the Plex while watching a movie. Every time I do, the movie locks up until the copy is halted or completed. Hopefully it continues to work as it has.

I own the Shield Pro 2019 since April 2020.
I have no problem with it, the only thing I can fault the Shield is its low internal memory capacity. I solved the problem by adding a 128 GiB USB drive as Shield memory. I have a networked NAS and I have no problem with any of this.

My Shield regularly broadcasts 3 streams at the same time (local and remote), transcod on live if necessary and synchronize the versions to my phone.

I have made all the updates that came out.

Well, I’m not making it up! I can shoot a video of it doing what I’m saying its doing.
If I factory reset the Shield Pro 2019, even with the stock bundled Plex software it does not create an actual Plex Server in my account, I can’t add libraries to it, if I upgrade to the newest versions it still doesn’t work but it goes from saying PMS is ‘Running’ to ‘Stopped’. When this is happening on a factory reset device, it’s 100% not the end user at fault. This is either the software, or less likely to be the Shield itself.
Do Plex have any technical support staff? Or are they one of these self labelled ‘progressive’ businesses who leave all technical support and product failures to their community to sort out on their behalf?

Mind sharing the logs of your Plex Media Server on that Shield?
https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

If the PMS is not running, you might need to manually access the Shield storage to collect those files (2nd part of the above support article). The article below describes how to access the shield storage;
https://support.plex.tv/articles/220347688-accessing-shield-storage/

Sure, I’ve tried making sense of these and scanning for something that looks like a pointer but I can’t see anything.Logs.zip (241.2 KB)

Looks like there’s 2 issues. One about the networking and one about the account being used.

As you pointed out, accessing the Plex Media Server via its local IP address gives you the Plex interface – so the Plex Media Server is certainly running. According to your logs, you’re however interacting with it as “guest”. That might explain why you get the “no soup for you” message.
Can you perform the procedure described in the linked support article (below) to unlink your PMS from whatever account it’s being linked to. Afterwards, open it again using its local IP address – this should bring up the setup screen (if the server has never been setup properly) or allow you to “claim” your server via Settings > [Server Name] > General.

I’m not exactly sure about the networking issue. It seems like you’ve setup your home network (or at least the network segment in which the Shield is running) to use a custom IP range… 12.15.1.* is not a regular “private network” range according to RFC 1918.

I agree, NCrossy1980. Just got my Shield Thursday with HDhomerun. I get an error whenever I try to record a show from the guide and the app also crashes randomly. Tried a few fixes in the post below. I just now reset my shield back to factory defaults and will use the ‘out of the box’ plex version for a while and see what happens. I’m trying to get away from WMC, and this seems like a great way to do that, but the Plex app is just not working right.

I see a lot of people are having similar issues, and Plex admins seem to be AWOL and not responding, or, responding very little.

I agree, no end of grief with PMS on Shield 2019. Printed off the advice, purchased a 128g SSD USB, folded it into memory, went through the painful task of combining it with my storage. Had to start and stop the Plex Server several times, had to reboot the whole device a couple of times. Still, forever seeing the bang ! in the yellow circle indicating that my Plex Player cannot see the server, even though it’s running. I just went to check if everything was going to go OK with my NFL records. The Shield Plex Server showed activity with last evening’s news show. Trying to see what’s going on I noticed I could see the Guide but not “DVR Schedule” tab. Could not access with Dash on my phone either. Are you guys serious about supporting Plex Server on the Shield?

Sorry for some reason the forum isn’t sending me email notifications of a reply, so I’ve just noticed this.
Regarding interacting it with Guest, that’s a mystery. When I set up PMS on the Shield, I’m logged into a desktop session as my primary Plex account at plex.tv/link when the link is made and I’ve never ever used a guest account explicitly. But, I’ll check out whatever is contained in there and see it if it offers anything different to what I’ve already tried. Thanks!

@tom80H That article you linked only references PMS on Windows, MAC or Linux, there are no instructions in there for PMS on a Shield?
And correct 12.15.1.x is my custom home LAN address assigned by DHCP - I’ve had that range for 4 years now and currently have 50+ networked devices with dozens others over the years, none of which have ever taken issue with it. I wasn’t aware there was super secret club rules on what range you should have internally, but my main Windows based PMS (the one which works and I was hoping to move onto the Shield) hasn’t taken issue with the IP range.
Either way, am I missing something with that article with their being no reference to the Shield in it?

Totally agree. Plex on Shield is a disaster, and every time they do an update they seem to change the UI to the worse. I’ve had it for well over a year now and it’s a total pain in the ass. It’s actually easier to use Plex on my iPad and cast it to the Apple TV, which is totally ridiculous.

The Shield itself is one of those apparently great pieces of hardware that has a myriad of little flaws. Those flaws are sometimes exposed in all software the runs on it but that is really quite rare. More commonly it is only one or two apps hat expose the flaw.

I have had apps Plex, Emby, VLC or any of several other apps that fail to paly just one or two files correctly but those files play great on all the other apps in the list. That same file plays fine in all the listed apps on any Fire device or any other Android device.

I do not know what the flaw is and it appears that the Shield’s developers strive to make fixing said problems as hard as possible by making a stable player a moving target.

I have tried, repeatedly (over 9 times), to get a Plex server working correctly on my Shield and every time, at some point, I have had to do a factory reset on the Shield just to get a stable device back from the brink.

I do now have a stable Emby server running on my Shield and it has been running for almost 6 months. Both the Plex player and the Emby player are now working OK on the Shield but there are still glitches on a few files on both players and it is not the same files on Each.

People say the Shield is a great player and it plays everything but I reserve “great” for devices that play my whole library fine. My Roku Ultras do that. My Fire 4K stick does that. Even my 2 no-name Android boxes do that. My Shield just does not do that. What it plays it plays great but there are just too many problems with too many of my file for me to continue to recommend the Shield.

If Plex has indeed "given up on the Shield I could not blame them. The people developing for the Shield itself just make it very hard.
