DLNA browser and player

I know Plex has a DLNA server, but would be great if plex had a DLNA client to play from DLNA servers too. Maybe a DLNA channel?

my motivation is that my TV (Panasonic tx-p50vt55) has a DLNA server and can stream from its satellite or terrestrial DVB receivers to the local network. Plex DLNA client would enable would ensure highest quality streaming media in 1 handy application. Also i'm struggling to find a good DLNA client for the Mac, VLC doesn't just display the DLNA info as well as windows media player which just detects the TV and shows all available channels with no user config (never thought i'd praise a standard M$ app).

TIA

This would be excellent on the Android client.  I've tried every media player that I can get to run on my GTV box, and it's pretty clear-cut for me:  from either network shares or DLNA servers, every media player fails on some files (either codec/container failure or just too high bit rate); Plex, on the other other, plays everything I throw at it.

This would be a great idea. This would make it easier to stream from other computers that are already sharing media through DLNA but don't want to create a network share.

I agree, I would love to stream my Slacker to PMS with BubblePNP on Android.

I would like to see this happen too, and I was rather suprised to find that Plex doesn't already support browsing and streaming DLNA MediaServers.

I really dont have time for it but I've looked a little into doing it myself.  I have the Python skills, but no experience with Plex plugins, and the DLNA protocol is rather complex, so it will likely be quite a while, if at all, before I'm able to make much progress on it.

@Robin i'm wondering if there are some open source dlna libraries that could be used for a plugin. I don't have the skills myself, but may spend some time tinkering once i get the time.

None of the OSS Python libraries I've found are directly suited for use in a Plex plugin, but I have been using them to learn from and have borrowed bits of code where it made sense.  I'm currently working on device discovery and so far there haven't been any major problems.  Progress is slow however because of other committments, but it is moving forward.

bump

need to entice others to endorse this idea so the Plex creates can consider it.

+1 for this one
