DLNA Controller App that works with Plex

Server Version#:
Player Version#: Plex Web Version 4.57.4

Hi there, I’m new to the community and am a newbie on a learning curve. I run Plex Media Server on a small NAS computer (Sonore’s Sonictransport) and a music player connected to my DAC (Sonore’s microRendu) which is running a DLNA renderer.

The Plex Media Server’s .web interface is not talking to the DLNA renderer/music player. I was told by Sonore that I need a DLNA controller app.

Can anyone recommend a DLNA controller app? Thanks.

I should add that I’m playing the songs off the Plex’s Web interface on my Windows PC

Plex has a built-in DLNA server – however that’s disabled by default.
You can enable it in your server’s settings: Settings > [Server Name] > DLNA > Enable the DLNA server.

Usually you should be good with that and can ignore all the other settings in that section. Keep in mind, with DLNA, everybody inside your home network can access that media (this will bypass a potential home setup with parental controls).

After enabling the DLNA server, your Sonore microRendu should be able to see the Plex Media Server and stream your media.

Hi tom80H,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ve had the DLNA server enabled as you described but no luck so far.

Sonore suggested I install a separate DLNA controller app that goes between Plex’s DLNA server and my music player/DLNA renderer. Does that make sense to you?

Regards,

Paul

On first read this sounded a bit crazy to me as all the apps/devices I’ve been using that provide some DLNA functionality had that functionality built-in.

From what you describe and the little information I could find on Sonore’s homepage, it appears their product doesn’t have a full-fledged DLNA player but only a “renderer”. The renderer part seems to be “offering itself” as a streaming target in your network and can be addressed by a “controller”. At least that’s how I’m reading the related Wikipedia article (-> DMR vs. DMP).

You can check out if the Sonore microRendu is showing up as a streaming target inside your Plex app (e.g. the web app or Plex on a mobile device). My TV’s built-in video app is acting as a DLNA renderer and that’s showing up as a player to which I can stream (thought that might be because the TV supports a Chromecast streaming protocol).

If that’s not working for you, I cannot provide much additional input (never ran into that situation before, so I’m not familiar with dedicated DLNA controller apps).

Thanks tom80.

Yeah - you’ve got it.

The moving parts in a DLNA system are Servers, Control Points, and Renderers.

Plex only provides a DLNA Server.

If Sonore only provides a Renderer, then a DLNA Control Point is still required.

(Some apps provide both DLNA Controller and DLNA Renderer functions. It appears that Sonore does not.)

There are a ton of DLNA Controller apps out there. I bet Sonore can give specific recommendations.

Yeah, that’s why it appears. Plex doesn’t include a DLNA Control Point or Renderer.
