Server Version#: Version 1.32.5.7349
Player Version#:
I have Plex Media Server PMS running on either Synology or MACmini. Both instance work well and can be accessed from Plex smartphone (iPhone) App and Plex tablet (iPad) App without problem.
Access from Plex app on iPhone and iPad detect various Players in the network and can stream to them - LG TV, HIFI Player AVM, Apple AirExpress etc.
When accessing WebPlex on Safari browser the PMS is not showing one single Player.
Discovery of the Players should work - at least GDM is on. And while using the Plex App on iPhone / iPad the PMS is capable to stream content to the Players.
How can PMS made ready to stream content direct to players in the network without being routed thru smartphone or tablet?
Thanks for the swift reply.
Not sure if I got the meaning of DLNA controller correct - so let me add one question.
This means if the Plex Media Server is executed on my mac and i access via Browser I will never discover my LG TV or other Players in my network. And the player will not be shown on the “select player” button in to right corner.
Is this the restriction that Plex Media Server cannot be used as a DLNA controller?
It may be able to discover them and control them if they are running a genuine Plex client.
But if they only run a generic DLNA-compatible player, it won’t.
Hello OttoKerner, thanks for detailed description.
Using Plex Media Server to stream music/audio in conjunction with a generic DLNA-compatible Player always involves a third device with a genuine Plex client / App.
In a setup PMS / Plex on iPhone / HIFI receiver DLNA ready this lead to the situation that music stops playing when I leave the floor or go to the garage and Plex App on iPhone looses intermittent connection.
Is there a way to raise a request to enhance the controlling capabilities of the Plex Media Server? Either in the base product or as add-on functionality within Plex pass?
For home music usage a remote control only usage would be a relieve in network traffic to/from phone/tablet.
That’s not accurate. You can have genuine Plex clients doing both the controlling and the actual playing.
In fact, if done this way, there is no problem if the controlling device is leaving the local network. The player device has control of th eplay queue and will continue to play directly fromn the server.
Whereas if you use either AirPlay or ChromCast protocols, the controlling device must always be present for playback to continue. Simply because it acts as a relay for the audio data.
At this point in time it’s very unlikely that the DLNA-related capabilities of Plex will be extended in the future.
