Do all files need to be in the Plex lib. folder?

Server Version#:DS412+
Player Version#:na

Greetings. I have not set up a Plex server yet.

I have a Synology DS412+ file server, I have several partitions such as a music drive, media drive & others, etc. I do not want to move these files from their original location & do not want duplicates elsewhere on the server.
Do all files need to be put in the Plex library folder or is there a way to point Plex to these different drives and use the files from there?

Thanks in advanced.
Aaron

The Plex share is supposed to be off limits for your media or any files you’re dealing with.

If you look into that folder, you’ll find a number of files in various languages telling you NOT to add anything there.

Keep your media where it is and point your Plex libraries to those shares/folders.

Adding stuff to the Plex data folder will mess things up most of the times… so don’t even think of it

Thank you very much! That is a relief!

Added: I misunderstood how this worked, from a video I watched, it looked like Plex moved (or you need import) all of your files into a central location for it’s use etc.

Much thanks to both of you who replied, very quick!

The next thing you need to know is how to name your media. It’s very important that your files are named correctly.

Sweet! Thanks, I do have some older mp3 files that probably not named correctly.

Music mp3 files usually have embedded metadata so the file names aren’t as important.
I use a program called MP3Tag in Windows to edit music file metadata.

Nice, TY again!
