Hi folks,
New kid question here. If I’m setting up a local area network - based Plex “household” in which all I want to do is manage and play files stored locally. Do any of the devices (server, phones, smart TVs) have to access the Internet to be able to connect with the local server at all?
We frequently have Internet connection outages; and when we travel on long trips, taking devices with us and having our media and players local with us – and not dependent upon the Internet at all – is a plus.
Plex is dependent on the internet.
Many client types can handle temporary internet outages fine, as long as you’re not attempting to switch user during an outage.
But for initial setup, internet connectivity is very much required.
And frequently moving the server machine into a different location is a world of hurt. Don’t do it, unless you create a whole LAN (with its own router) that you can take with you.
I think your use case is better served with an Android box, like the nVidia Shield and installing Kodi on it.
