Why does Plex

Why does Plex have to have the internet to access your server when it’s in the next room. I lost my internet late last night and thought well I’ll just watch some TV Shows I have on the Plex Server. NA Not going to happen it still has to have the internet to access my Plex Server in the other room. So is there a way to turn that on or off or NO you have to have the internet to access your Plex Server. I can open up File Explorer App and watch a Movie or TV Show from the same sever with out the internet. Yes I know File Explorer is hooked directly to the same network but WOW why can’t Plex be when I’m home.

You can use the support article above to allow your local devices to connect without authentication. This will prevent having to have an Internet connection for authentication.

Just to point out, most Smart TV apps still also require internet to use them, so they will still not be usable without internet.

In this case, I would set up a DLNA server. Be careful though, there are no restrictions, parental controls, etc when doing this.

I have my DLNA server set up on my Synology through Media Server. It allows restricting access by IPs and can be set up to only show indexed folders instead of Plex showing the entire library. But I’m not sure what type of server OP has.

I’m sorry I should have mentioned that I was on my iPad us older folks go to bed early and I just watch something until the iPad smacks me on the forehead telling me to put it away because I’m falling a sleep.

This is not a real solution because then everyone becomes the “main user”. If you have kids in your house they will have access to everything, including your special libraries.

Plex uses this “local authentication” as their “solution” for Internet outages, but it is not really a solution.
