Do I need a Plex Pass to watch content?

Hello all, I don’t have a Plex server, I just watch content from my family and friends that they host. I received the email about the lifetime pass going up in July, and I’m just wanting to know if I need it or not? I did read https://support.plex.tv/articles/202526943-plex-free-vs-paid/ and it seems like I don’t. I also purchased the mobile streaming upgrade a few years ago to be able to watch on my phone.

I just wanted to verify for sure, if I’m not planning on hosting my own content, do I need a Plex Pass if I’m just watching?

Thanks.

Plex Pass value will mostly show when you’re hosting a server of your own.
Though, there’s some playback related features which are restricted to Plex Pass members, e.g. skipping intros/credits, downloading items (if enabled by the server owner).

If you’re streaming remotely from servers of family and friends, you should only need to consider that this is no longer free in the new apps. It’ll require either…

  • the server owner having a Plex Pass → enabling their users to watch remotely from their server/libraries too
  • you having a Remote Watch pass

Edit: The mobile apps are no longer restricted to 1 minute playback. With that, the in-app activation is obsolete / no longer applicable.

Got it, thanks for the info.

You’re in luck! They just bumped the lifetime pass from $259.99 to $749.99! A 188% increase.

They’re completely out of touch. There was a mass exodus, myself included, over to Jellyfin after their last increase. I think they’re literally trying to drive their own business into the ground.

Sir, they already know.
