Do we really need a Custom SSL and domain for Plex?

Actually I need to know why people wants to setup custom SSL for plex. We can simply forward a port for remote access. We can access mostly latest Plex web interface via https://plex.tv/web. It’s already secured with SSL.

But Plex has Settings-> Network page to mention custom SSL certificate and custom domain.

If Plex is looking after security for us why would we need to worry about setting up a custom SSL and a Custom domain?

What are the real benefits of having custom SSL and domain?

Please help me to understand the real advantages of custom SSL and domain.

Thank you guys

cheers

You don’t need custom SSL.

Plex provides a custom-generated certificate for exclusive use with your server.

On the Network page, you can ADD a secondary if you wish but it’s not required.

@ChuckPa thank you very much for your reply and explanation. What are the extra benefits if we have installed own SSL and custom domain?

cheers

The only “benefit” is if you have your own DDNS / remote server somewhere and you wish to access the server directly by a DNS name.

Attaching a cert to your domain name authenticates and provides the foundation for secured communication between client & server.

@ChuckPa Thank you for your reply. I guess there isn’t any difference in accessing a plex web app via own domain or plex.tv because we have the same functionality.
So It’s better to access my plex media server remotely via plex.tv rather than using own domain and SSL. And access it locally when I’m at home

thank you for your clarification.

The only difference is whether you rely on your own mechanism for DDNS / SSL
-or-
you let http://app.plex.tv do all the DDNS and SSL for you.

@ChuckPa Thank you very much for your response. I don’t think it’s not that beneficial to reinvent the wheel unless we have some specific needs. I think even we have own domain and SSL, still we need to rely on plex.tv. If plex.tv went offline, our PMS will go offline too.
