Does anyone understand how plexamp works or is meant to work?

I have been having a heck of a time getting plexamp to do a damn thing it should, and it seems any questions asked around here go unanswered.

Has it been abandoned?

Does no one care at all about plexamp anymore?

I need contact with someone that has actual knowledge on how it’s meant to work, because that knowledge plain and simple doesn’t exist anywhere online, and it is impossible to configure at all!

If anything, Plexamp is one of the more active projects (with the last update less than a week ago: Plexamp Release Notes - Plex Labs - Plex Forum).

What exactly have you tried, and where are you getting stuck? Plexamp connects to the music libraries of your server, so the core configuration happens on the server itself by setting up music libraries.

It seems when it comes to configuring the output of sound, plexamp likes to do it’s own damn thing, and completely ignore the end user’s custom configurations for sound in linux. I have successfully configure a Pi3 to output 5.1 surround via hdmi, it required a few extra steps. I wasn’t able to repeat that on a Pi5. I dabbled with PulseAudio on that, I forget where I landed there, but I’ve since shifted from hdmi to a DAC8x. I need to get plexamp to use customized settings programmed in the OS, so that I can set the OS to take 5.1 content and downmix it to 4.0, and plexamp to respect that. But it seems plexamp is so insistent on doing it’s own thing, all I can do is get stuck in a loop of it now insisting the world is stereo and discarding all channels but the fronts - and I know plexamp can actually output 5.1 because I did get a Pi3 to do it with hdmi. But I can’t for the life of me figure out how any of this works, and that knowledge seems to be held by people that aren’t talking or sharing, as all inquiries here get nowhere.

I find it ironic that plexamp is supposedly a more active program - there seems to be zero support for it.

Part of figuring out this problem needs to address this discrepency.

Right now I am listening to 5.1 surround content on my Pi5 with DAC8x, by selecting it directly.

It is outputting 5.1 channels of audio out 3 of the 2 channel outputs of the DAC8x

However, please review this screenshot:

It says 44.1 kHz 2 channel.

Any other configurations I’m playing with to try and get plexamp to output 5.1 audio to my OS configurations that will then downmix it to 4.0, I also see this.

Now that I see it always displays this even when it isn’t true, that means this bit of info is meaningless. It isn’t always true.

I don’t understand how this is meant to work - is it meant to show inaccurate data?

Where are you inquiring, besides this thread?

You’ll find attitude goes a long way here; you have people replying to your post within hours, and that’s inadequate?

It is not showing “live data”, it doesn’t have visibility of what’s going on all the way down the audio stack.

Make sure you have Sample Rate Matching enabled for any non-stereo sort of configurations.
