Does file metadata get updated by Plex ?

Hi,

Currently experimenting with Plex on a QNAP NAS. I have spent a lot of time on updating the metadata of my MP3 archive, but before I let Plex loose on the files, I’d like to know if I make changes to things like Track Name, Rating etc, does that get reflected back into the actual file ? I’d hate for it to suddenly start updating the MP3 with data from online sources that I don’t want.

I’ve tried experimenting tonight with some test files and I don’t think it does (which is both a relief, but also a shame).
When I delete a file in plex, the file itself is deleted so the server does have write access.

I also noticed Plex doesn’t read in the Ratings that are set within my MP3s when it onboards the files.

Plex never changes metadata on files.

You can disable the ‘delete’ option.
Settings - Server - Library - ‘Show Advanced’ - “Allow media deletion”

Hi,

Many thanks for the reply, and although that makes my initial onboard a lot less worrysome, isn’t it missing a trick ?

I notice it doesn’t seem to import the ratings I’ve assigned within the file, so I’d lose all that useful info in the import.

But also if I do mark something say as 5*, then shouldn’t it update the MP3 ? MediaMonkey, iTunes, Windows Media Player etc all write back to the file to keep the data included within the file following the MP3 format.
