A have an ASUS ROG G20 (Older version with a 4th Gen i5 and 2GB GTX 750 Ti video card) that I would like to use just as a Plex media player. The motherboard has an HDMI port and the video card also has an HDMI port.
I have tried creating a USB key with the embedded version of OpenPHT (1.7.1) and whilst I can get video to work with both the GTX 750 HDMI and on board HDMI I cannot get any audio whatsoever. Whenever I go to audio settings it appears as though OpenPHT (Or is it the underlying OS) recognizes that I am playing through a pioneer VSX1021 AVR as that is one of the audio devices I can select. Trouble is that I still don’t get any sounds (Whether from the interface nor any video file).
I have been using the Generic.x86_64.img.gz image. I don’t know what the Intel_EGL.x86_64.img.gz is for (Can’t find any mention of it).
Would trying 1.8.0 make any difference?
You should definitely try 1.8.0 it is rebased on Libreelec 8
if it doesn’t work you could install windows+openpht
I am trying to get away from a windows based system. I am currently using Windows 10 + Kodi + Plex plugin. I like the fact that I can boot directly into Kodi on startup and then straight into the PLex plugin. I like the interface too.
What I don’t like is the Windows messages that pop up and stay on screen. I have not found a way to get rid of them other than restarting the machine (It’s in a media room without keyboard, mouse or monitor. The only interface I have to it is via Flirc and Harmony remote. If I set up Harmony with Flirc for Windows then Flirc for Kodi stops working. Basically I can control either the media center software or Windows).
Also with Windows sometimes (Maybe once a week) Windows will become the foreground application. Kodi will be in the background but you can’t interact with it. I have to go into the media room and physically turn the box off/on.
So, what I’d like is to make a Plex appliance out of an ASUS ROG G20 with GTX 750 Ti. Any ideas? (Or am I just better off forgetting that idea and going with a Shield TV?)
sorry, i not clear if you have tried 1.8.0 embedded or not ? because if you haven’t and it works that is your ideal solution
but if it doesnt work, as for you not liking windows because of XXX messages etc, that is true, but its windows -** you can turn everything off you dont like**, i dont have any problems running windows on my htpcs, i have simply disabled notifications, updates etc, all those things that is needed for HTPC/Kiosk use. its really simple to do. alot of these you just set a group policy in gpedit.msc, its really simple.
i still personally believe windows is the best platform to run a HTPC from - but im a windows enginner so.

I will try this weekend. It’s not that simple to do. The only HDMI monitor I have is the TV in my living room. I have to take the PC out of the media room, grab a long HDMI cable and set it up in the living room to tinker with.

I like simple. Can you either give me the steps or point me at an article that shows how to to put windows 10 in HTPC/Kiosk mode?

I was an Apple engineer for 21 years so…
I found this software called frontface. Seeing as I’m using WIndows 10 Home Edition and can’t use the built-in kiosk mode for Pro/Enterprise, do you think this will do the trick?
personally id just do it manually, for windows 10, the 2 below i can recall of the top of my head,
1/ in services.msc - set the Windows Update service to disabled. if you want to do updates later you can just enable it, do the updates, then disable it.
2/ gpedit.msc Group Policy Editor, in the left-hand pane, drill down to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar. On the right, find the “Remove Notifications and Action Center” item and double-click it.Set to enabled.
Save and reboot
