(I could try this out myself, but I’m lazy, so I thought I’d ask in the forum.) Does Plex DVR allow a Windows PC to go to sleep and then wake up to perform recordings (presumably by using a scheduled task as WMC does)? I prefer my media centers not to be awake 24x7 (HDD life, energy consumption, noise, etc.). If not, is that a feature Plex would consider implementing at some point?
If your machine is asleep then it won’t record
Agreed they should implement this as a feature, this would be a useful as well as environmentally sound feature
Individually the energy saved would be negligible, if it was enabled as default as it all adds up
Question… maybe I’m thinking about it wrong, but even if you guys do successfully have Plex DVR do what you want and wake up from sleep on Windows, Plex DVR would have to somehow wake up literally 60 sec or less in order to readjust itself to properly record at the exact given time the recording is scheduled. I have my Plex DVR server setup on a 2009 MacBook Pro with a SSD inside. I however have my media stored on a 8GB external hard drive and I have Mac OS put that hard drive to sleep when not in use and it wakes up when a recording is scheduled. I have run into minor problems with my recordings missing about 30 sec to 60 sec of the show when my drive is sleeping and has to wait to record when the drive has to spin. So, I’m wondering how Windows users will deal with issues like I have when the whole machine is either sleep or hibernate.
I’m sure the developers won’t make the mistake of scheduling the machine to resume at precisely the instant that the recording is to begin. WMC’s solution is to wake up about five minutes before a recording is scheduled. This gives the machine plenty of time to spin up HDDs, check for Plug-and-Play devices, connect to the Internet, and perform any other housekeeping duties it needs to do when resuming from sleep before it needs to start recording. You might want to use the same strategy with your Mac.
(I’m not sure about MacOS, but on Windows, you could schedule a task to open the File Explorer to the external HDD in order to wake it up before the recording starts.)
You aren’t the first to ask for this:
like and comment on these threads in feature request forum to make sure devs see it =)
Done and done. Probably only the thread in the actual Feature Request forum will be noted, but it can’t hurt.
I searched the forums for similar posts, and I didn’t find these. I guess I didn’t use the right keywords. I’ll make more of an effort next time.

Far from negligable, your computer might be one of the highest contributers to your energy bill. My HP XW6400 uses around 250W, if it’s on all year (x24x365) and energy costs 12p/kWh this adds up to £262, five times more than the Plex pass. If the computer could sleep half the day that alone would save twice the cost of the Plex pass.
