Does anyone know if Plex for Roku supports Dolby Vision at all? It works on the Plex app on my Amazon Firestick 4K but not my Plex app for Roku on my TCL Roku 4K TV.
I’m fairly sure that Roku players do not support Dolby Vision.
Correct.
Roku won’t, if you are referring to ripped media)or even apps like Netflix either). As far as I know, the only streaming box that can do it is the Nvidia Shield 2019. I think LG TVs can do it also. Does the newer Firesticks support streaming ripped Dolby Vision movies? I didn’t think it did. I thought it only did DV in streaming app like Netflix and such
The Nvidia Shield will be the only device to give you not only Dolby Vision, but also uncompressed hi def audio(Atmos/DTS:X).
Firestick/cube support HDR10 as well as HDR10+ and DV. It seems to work with ripped 4K discs, but I have had trouble getting an entire movie to play without ultimately freezing and having to be stopped and resumed.
Thank you for all of your great replies and quick answers! Yes the new Firestick does support DV. I suspect that Rokus hardware isn’t strong enough to support DV.
I doubt it is strength. I suspect it is licensing money.
Interesting
My TCL TV from 2018 with Roku built in absolutely supports Dolby Vision. Also the new 2020 Roku Ultra supports it as well.
The question remains, does the Roku Plex app support Dolby Vision?
The answer is YES. I just tested with some Dolby Vision test files and it works fine. It says Dolby Vision (not HDR) in the top right.
I am using the Plex Preview app, FYI.
