I have just begun re-ripping my DV 4K collection w/ MakeMKV 1.15.3.
From the web player on file info it clearly recognizes all of the DV metadata in the container.
This request is primarilly for Roku TV (TCL etc), not sure what platform difference there is between TCL and other TV manufacturers, Xbox, or stand alone devices.
I have ROKU TV on 5 house TV’s was following the Shield/Android tagged version of this only to realize a request for ROKU platform was not made yet. I imagine ROKU has the largest PLEX install base of non-PC platforms.
Let make this happen!! I want to ditch my standalone player as it seems both Microsoft AND Sony did not add DV support for UHD discs in this upcoming console generation FTL!
Roku recently introduced support Dolby Vision on the Roku Ultra (4800). You’ll need to refer to the specific Roku TV model to verify Dolby Vision is supported. Dolby Vision should work in the Plex channel as long as the devices support it.
I have TCL R615 (2018) and R625(2019) tv’s, both support player led dolby vision over HDMI and TV led DolbyVision (Netflix, Vudu, Etc).
I have been following the Nvidia Shield DV featyre request and bug threads, and it seems that platform/Plex Client (which is the first Im ware of) is still maturing with several issues at differnt levels.
I have not seen any notification or documentation that PLEX has added DolbyVision support for MKV on any Roku device be it standalone player or TV OS.
Can you please clarify your statement?
If I read it generoursly it suggests that Plex on RokuTV already supports player and tv led profiles, its just the Roku TTV OS does not support player led profiles from app, but that the new ultra standalone player is capable because it sends over hdmi as player led profile. (???)
(All DirectPlay Forced, Direct Stream Disabled)
MakeMkv Tests
P4 no HDR, no DV
P5 no HDR, no DV, No Atmos,
P7 FEL (DTS-HM-MA) HDR triggers, no DV, no sound
–(615 and 625 dont have EARC)
– DirectPlay Auto, Direct Stream Enabled: HDR triggered, No DV, plays with sound
– DirectPlay Auto, Direct Stream Disabled: does not play(old Synology Plex Server)
P7 MEL HDR Triggered, no DV
P81 HDR Triggered, no DV
All 3 MBOX test files (p5 and p81) triggered DV.
So what does this mean? Roku needs update, Plex needs update, I have to reencode my 1.15.3 DV MKVs into different profiles?
Why does P5 and P81 from MakeMKV not work but MBOX does?
Im assuming most all of my 4K DV collection is P7 FEL, with a few P7 MEL maybe, is their no hope for those to ever see the light of day?
How much wiggle room do we have(?), the linked ROKU documentation states it only supports MKV to 40Mbps with peak at 1.5x average, but I have 88Mbps 1917 playing on these TV’s/Roku from plex that routinely is peaking to150-175Mbps, so that 40 number sounds a bit conservative.(But i digress on this)
I was hoping that the P5 test would work, and wasn’t expecting the others to work. Roku claims dvhe.05 support.
What happens on that sample? Just the normal washout?
I wouldn’t have high hopes of playing any Profile 7 BD DV rips on a Roku. It’s my understanding that Dolby makes that un-possible. Maybe somebody will speak up and tell me why I’m wrong.
I agree the 40 Mbps on the Roku is a bit conservative. I think it’s a combination of things. I think it’s a lowest common denominator, for even the oldest Roku devices. I think it’s mostly because these are Internet streaming boxes, and they weren’t design to decode Blu-ray.
I also think it’s because they don’t have a ton of memory, and at those bitrates they can’t cache much. I think this is mitigated when the server is on the LAN and can keep the client fed.
Whats the difference between the MakeMKV P5 sample and the MBOX P5 sample?
The reason for DirectPlay Forced is that all my 4k BluRays are native bitrate, and my 8 year old synology DS1812+ (plex server) has NOOOOOO hope of transcoding the video, I just disable DirectStream to simplify complexity of testing. I dont think my synology can even keep up transcoding lossless DTS if requsted.
Im complete noob to remux’ing, is it possible to remux P7 into a compatible P5 or p81? Sorry if that is a blunder of a question.
I mean…I can play profile 7 UHD rips on my Shield TV just fine so this has to be something that is possible on Roku. Dolby Vision is just wonky and even on the shield you sometimes have to try starting the video a couple times to get DV to trigger so I can see how there might be some confusion on “does it work or not” as there are probably a good amount of people who see DV not trigger when they try to play it and assume it just doesn’t work without trying to get it to play a couple times.
I have a pre-Dolby Vision Roku Ultra and I have been impressed with its ability to play high bitrate MKV UHD rips over 5ghz wifi. I am playing Dolby Vision MKV rips and they just fall back to HDR which is expected. I have one of the new Chromecasts with Google TV also and thought I would try replacing the Roku with it because it supports Dolby Vision, but it can’t stream the 4K UHD rips without buffering severely. I couldn’t even get Dolby Vision to trigger on Disney+ so I think google has just screwed up the Dolby Vision implementation on the Chromecast with Google TV.
Anyways seeing how good the Roku handles playing high bitrate MKV UHDs I was really hoping if I were to upgrade to a new Dolby Vision Roku Ultra that it would just work, but it sounds like Dolby Vision on Roku might be problematic? When you did testing did you try starting multiple times to see if eventually Dolby Vision triggers?
