I can see on the PC server that Plex knows a file is DolbyVision, but on the Roku Ultra LT the Plex client just says 4K and if I play it the colors are all wrong and it’s not bright. Is there a switch I missed somewhere or does Plex not do DolbyVision on Roku even though Ultra LT supports it?
Roku Ultra LT will support it, but your TV might not which is likely the case if you’re getting weird colors (or a setting is off on the TV). Which TV are you using with the Roku? What is your server hosted on (in case it’s a transcoding support situation)?
Hi, thanks for the reply!
The TV is a Sony Bravia x800h. It definitely supports DV and has DV Bright, Dark and Vivid modes.
The Plex Sever is hosted on a Skytech Blaze PC with a Ryzen 5 CPU. It hardly ever transcodes unless I play old divx files. The PC software sees the file as DV, the Roku client doesn’t.
Roku might not support the specific DolbyVision profile on that file. I’ve seen some notes about that in other threads - DV profile support issues - but hadn’t run into it myself. I think streaming and BluRay use different ones and Roku being a “streaming support only” device (no expectation of BluRay playback) might not support all the DV profiles.
To help in this case these are my recommendations for next steps.
Try the Plex app for your AndroidTV native playback.
Do to licensing Dobly Vision cannot be transcoded by Plex Media Server which means it must be direct playable on client. Which is why tonemapping (which fixes the muted colors) DV will not work as it is the transcoder that does that.
Most devices if they support Dolby Vision only support the streaming profile, which is profile 5 if I recall. The TV, Receiver, HDMI cables and any other devices in chain must support as well.
There is info here specific to Roku support. Roku DV Support
Thanks, will see if it was transcoding. What got me was that the Roku Client didn’t recognize the DV, but the PMS does. Will also try it on the TV’s Android player too.
Please share the info @Insomnic_1 requested. The XML info would be perfect. I’m particularly interested in anything related to D O V I as well as Codec ID.
Some of the clients haven’t updated how this is reported and displayed. Don’t worry too much about this.
Tried the DV file on the Android client - same thing, no brightness and weird colors, with the client there not seeing DV. There’s no transcoding, just Direct Play. Here’s a screenshot of the PC. Both clients just show 4K. The gist is, no Dolby Vision. No problem, I’m all HDR now and will stay that way. Volts, I will try to find that XML info you requested, but it’ll have to wait a bit.
