Does Plex management care about the Android TV Client?

I’m an age old plex pass enthusiast and I have to say; despite all the visual upgrades there seems to be a massive feature discrepancy between the Shield TV client and the roku, apple tv, etc…

Whether it’s the FF audio issue they can’t seem to target or the fact that clickable actors doesn’t work. (you can still click on them but nothing happens unlike almost every other client)

Again, huge plex fan but would love to know why Android TV is continually left in the dust.

I’ve been asking this same question for quite a while, with mostly crickets in response. The Shield is such an amazing platform, but it’s becoming less so with Plex.

I agree with your impression. The shield is the superior client and should receive a higher priority in development.

i’m a shield user myself (i have 2 of them), however i can’t agree that it should have a higher priority over any other device, that’s kind of elitest.

it should be no surprise that the part of the product that actually makes them money would have more attention given to it.

whilst the androidtv client does have it’s issues, in general it does what it’s meant to do to, and it does it reasonably well.

there currently aren’t any “show stopper” issues with the androidtv client.

you haven’t paid anything for the base product though, plex pass simply gives you additional services and features, the base plex product remains free to use.

Herman there are no show stoppers for you. For me and a lot of us every time we fast forward there’s a 75% chance the audio loses sync and you have to rewind it to sync again. To me that’s a show stopper.

Please don’t make blanket statements regarding functionality for others.

And yes, even though my plex pass doesn’t equate to the product it was still my choice to pay and evangelize for a product I believe in. For me that earns support or at the least communication.

At this point there isn’t higher priority; it’s that the Roku, Apple, etc… clients have more functionality than the Android TV. At the very least all clients should retrain feature parity and understand that others might have more because the platform is technically more able (like the Shield)

yes that does remain a bug, but hardly a showstopper IMO.
pressing back once to go back 10 seconds solves the issue.

a showstopper would be something that causes total failure of the app and/or playback.

actually, it doesn’t earn you anything other than getting access to the features that are behind the plex pass paywall.

we’ll agree to disagree on that, but I’m glad you have a firm opinion on the matter

Again, these are your definitions and as you put it “in your opinion”. So while you are definitely entitled to it, that doesn’t hold weight with other users.

Thanks!

exactly. i’m not expecting perfection, but this major issue has been around for well over 1.5 years now.

plenty of evidence around these forums to confirm my opinion may be closer to the truth than yours unfortunately (for us all). there have even been comments from plex employees themselves saying that plex pass doesn’t give any a higher level of support than non plex pass users.

you are, of course, correct, but equally that also means your opinion also does not hold weight with others.

that issue, is at least, being worked on with updates from a plex dev in the thread about the issue - which i have contributed to a few times.

which suggests that the devs to “care” about the androidtv client in some way, albeit not as much as some might want.

the biggest problem, IMO, is that we don’t have a public bug tracker, so we have no idea how many bugs have been “officially” logged and if they are actively being worked on.

having such a bug tracker might help with the perception that some have that nothing is being done. or it might indeed confirm that nothing is being done, which might be the reason why we don’t have a bug tracker - we’ll never know for sure.

Great talk!

Now the main point of this post was to bring attention that there are frustrated shield users who haven’t heard a thing from development. so let’s keep it on that vibe :relaxed:

think your best course of action would be to find the thread for each of the issues you currently have, and post your logs etc there to try and keep each issue thread active.

I’ve been doing that for months and nothing has been done, hence this thread  but thanks!

And Who’s fault is that?

I believe the Subject of this thread should be:
Does Plex MANAGEMENT care about the Android TV Client?

As I believe the devs DO care but Aren’t allowed the time needed…
And it’s not just the Shield…

great point. changing thread now.
