I used plex for a while but moved away and am thinking of coming back. But i want my NFO files to be used, natively if possible. Just checking to see if that is possible nowadays. Thanks
For movies it will use an NFO file natively, but not for TV Shows

More info here as well:
Thank you.
maybe I don’t need to worry about NFOs. How does my library metadata get saved with plex? The big one I want to be able to save and restore is played/unplayed status. Maybe Plex’s solution is better than NFOs. Do you have any insight or advice you can give me on that?

plex uses a database, that you can restore.
I wouldnt use NFOs
where is the database stored? Can I put it in, say, my dropbox (to take advantage of automatic versioning)?

You could use dropbox to save the data in those locations.
