Dolby Atmos support?

Since the May update, my Xbox try’s to upmix everything to atmos. But plex still converts atmos to aac or whatever. Is a direct stream still not supported?

If Dolby Atmos won’t work when utilizing ARC channel, how would you bypass that, using a different HDMI port rather than the ARC port?

Dolby Atmos won’t work when using your TV as the playback device and the ARC channel because current ARC only supports 5.1 channels (Dolby Digital +).

So to get Atmos you will have to use a third-party device to playback the media, such as Apple 4K TV or Nvidia Shield. Or wait until new TVs with HDMI 2.1 and eARC support arrive next year and get one of those.

AppleTV4k will not play ATMOS from PLEX. ATV4k with IOS 12 can play ATMOS content but PLEX wont let it.

ATMOS may work if you connect optical from your TV to your receiver but that is not ARC.

Forget about Plex all together.
Use the Xbox one x Movies & TV app and scroll to personal, there you can find your stuff stored in the external usb/hhd and then play it with ur AV receiver.
Dolby Atmos with 4kHDR all day baby!

I have a Nas with a external usb attached, to the usb i have all my movies. When I wanna watch a movie i just take the usb from nas and inserted in the Xbox.
No buffering, pure quality.
Plex gives me headaches and I stopped using it

Well here’s some good news finally. https://www.windowslatest.com/2019/01/29/windows-10-is-getting-dtsx-improvements-for-dolby-atmos-soon/

I will believe it when I see it.

I’ve bypassed the XBOX One altogether and now have my PC linked to my DENON receiver with spatial sound on and set to Dolby Atmos for Home Theatre. With this I can still use the PLEX Media Player on the PC and I’m getting ATMOS and DTS-X with no issues. It’s a shame this can’t be implemented in the PLEX Player for XBOX. I just don’t whiy it can’t as the XBOX is basically a PC under the hood.

I’ve been slowly getting my stuff to work in HDR and Dolby Atmos and here is my experience so far.

PMS is running on Windows 10
Media is stored on Synology via Map Drive

Xbox One X -> HDMI to LG Sk10y sound bar -> HDMI Arc to LG 2018 TV.

Xbox One X video settings test successful for HDR
Dolby App installed and Audio settings tested successful for Atmos
LG sound bar source is from HDMI1 which is Xbox One X
LG TV is HDMI2 Arc in from LG sound bar
LG TV has UHD enabled for HDMI Port 2
LG Audio is configured for ARC

Using the Insect Demo from the Windows Store has 4K, HDR, and Spatial Audio working.
LG TV shows HDR logo when starting
LG sound bar shows Dolby Atmos when sound starts

I’ve been testing with The Matrix (1999) movie and basically the best I can get is direct steaming with 4K HVEC and AC5.1 direct Steaming for Audio. Anytime I change the Audio to anything else it will want to transcode.

At this point I think the only limitation is Plex is lacking the Dolby Atmos support, which this thread is very old and I dont know if its some type of licensing issues or something? I really hope the sort it out.

My friend said just switch to a Shield as my client for 4K and wait until Microsoft/Dolby create an API that the Plex App can take advantage of (his words)

Yea the transcoding of TrueHD/Atmos to AAC on the Xbox version is causing all kinds of problems for me, Audio drops outs and constant buffering. What is stupid is if the video has a second track that is AAC it will play fine if I switch to that AAC track.

If Plex is going to transcode TrueHD/Atmos they need to make sure the transcoding is efficient and works well

Getting really old

does anything with DTS play?

You need a receiver that can decode it.

Work around here, hope this helps. Been using several months without issue.

Does Dolby Atmos work on Apple TV 4K via Plex ?

This is true, because the Nvidia Shield uses PCM while roaming the OS, it enters netflix as such. And seems a stand 5.1 capability. The xbox now forces Dolby Atmos encoding, so when the app launches on Xbox, it passes the info along properly and feeds you Atmos content.

This should be an easy fix for the folks at Netflix/Shield.

I’ve tried this and I still not able to get TrueHD to passthrough

I’d be happy with just playing without a buffering loop, non transcoded ATMOS is pretty much a pipe dream for the Plex Xbox version
