Dolby Atmos

I have ripped several blu ray discs that are in Dolby Atmos as MKV files using MakeMKV. They show on Plex as TrueHD 7.1. Does the Atmos info transfer to an MKV file? Anything I need to do to assure that the Atmos info in included in the ripped file?

Mod-Edit: moved this to a matching category… this is not a feature suggestion.

Ok. Thanks

It is a display issue, not a playback issue. Plex does not display if the file has Atmos, but it does play correctly. The same for Dolby Digital Plus + Atmos. Also, dts:X is displayed as dts-HD MA 7.1.

If you care to add your vote:

Thanks!

So, my processor shows that all Dolby TrueHD + Atmos as Dolby Digital+ DD Surround, and the “info” on any Atmos file just shows as Dolby TrueHD 7.1. Are you sure it is passing Atmos when my Marantz 8802A is not showing it as Atmos? Sorry if this is repetitive, but I just need confirmation that I understand this correctly. Thanks.

You might wanna mention which type of Plex client you are using to play the file.

Sorry, I am using Roku Premier 4K

Sorry, I am not familiar with this platform, but I seem to remember that it doesn’t support HDMI-“passthrough” of the higher-end sound formats.

You might have better luck with the nVidia Shield Pro or Plex HTPC.

I have no problem with the Roku passing through Dolby Atmos from all other sources, including Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix etc. Only Plex doesn’t pass through this info.

Hi @wbsherm - These sources are all streaming platforms, and because of this, they all stream Dolby Digital+ with Dolby Atmos (aka EAC3 with Dolby Atmos)… That is the difference.

BluRay rips will likely contain higher end formats, such as TrueHD with Dolby Atmos, as well as DTS-HD MA, and DTS-X.

It will be these higher end audio formats that the Roku may not support.

EDIT: Here is a link to the Roku community forums where users report that no one has yet got this working as of 11th November 2020…
