Dolby TrueHD 96 kHz Stuttering

Server Version#: 1.30.1.6562
Player Version#: 9.13.1.37459 (Nvidia Shield)

I’m experiencing stuttering when playing 96 kHz Dolby TrueHD tracks through Plex on my Nvidia Shield. This looks to be the same behavior described in this old post: Dolby TrueHD issue. The issue in that post appears to have been resolved with a hotfix released in 2020 by Nvidia, but I am running the current 9.1.1 Shield software so it would seem that this is either a separate issue or subsequent updates broke Dolby TrueHD playback again.

I’ve been testing with the Dolby Spheres v2 demo trailer and The Beatles White Album Blu-ray. At first I thought it was a network issue, but the files I’m attempting to play are less than 29 Mb/s. My Shield is hardwired to my network, and I am able to play 4K movies with much higher bitrates without any issues. Plex reports that it is direct playing.

I popped the White Album disc into my Blu-ray player to rule out my receiver, and it indeed played back without stuttering. I also played the White Album and Spheres files with the VLC Android app on my Shield, again without any stuttering. That seems to narrow down the culprit to the Plex player.

I don’t have any problems playing any of my 48 kHz TrueHD tracks, and even 96 kHz DTS-HD MA tracks play flawlessly. The issue seems to be specific to Dolby TrueHD 96 kHz (and higher, I assume) playing through Plex. I don’t have many movies with 96 kHz TrueHD, and the ones that do have secondary audio tracks, so I have a workaround. Just wondering if there is a fix I may have missed and if anyone is aware of this playback issue.

There are several threads discussing this issue. See here for the most recent one:
