Dolby Vision not working on 7.24 with single layer mp4 files

Okay. Thanks that makes sense but unfortunately it does not explains the actual difference, does it?.. or I just don’t get it

Thank you for the answer.
I’m not much for installing beta software though. Any idea/guess as to when we can expect it to be released to the public?

My Plex updated to 7.25 a few days ago, but DV still doesn’t work when played from the Android TV client. It works fine when served to my LG C9 WebOS client. Wasn’t it supposed to be working in 7.25 or did I miss something?

A question in the round. I created an MP4 example with chapters. It is the LG Test Video “LG Earth Dolby Vision UHD 4K demo.ts” + six “synthetic” Chapters.

How long does your server take to create thumbnails of this file?
Which CPU (or GPU) is installed at your server?

It takes a long time for me. My CPU is an i5 4440

It took about a minute on my Shield Pro 2019

I tested the LG DEMO file and the chapters work, but only from the chapter line. The step forward and back controls do not work.
The file plays and Dolby Vision is shown correctly both when playing it directly from the Shield Plex client and if played from my LG C9 WebOs client.
Do you have any idea why Dual Layer files will play Dolby Vision fine from my TV client, but not when played from the Android TV client on the Shield?

Thank you for testing it. I also have a Shield 2019 Pro. The shield does not create the thumbnails. Apparently that’s what the server does. My old i5 can not play hevc with hardware acceleration. That will be the reason why it takes me so long!? Currently they are still not there…

Which CPU (or gpu) does your server or nas have?

Dual Layer files are not supported by the shield as I understand.
Your TV can handle these. My LG SK9000 can handle it too.

NP! I make a living as a tester.
My media is on a nas with a weak CPU so my Shield 2019 is the server. It’s built in. You can mount your SMB shares directly on the Shield from settings and they will work as a local drive/folders directly on the Shield. It’s has hardware acceleration for HEVC playback and transcoding and it is amazingly powerful for it’s price.

Of course, using the shield as a server is a good thing but not for me and my setting. An update with cpu would cost me 250. A passive nvidia 1050 Ti costs 150. I have to figure out what’s best for plex. Any tips?

Why can’t you use the Shield as a server? I don’t feel like it’s using any overhead. It’s just streaming data from the NAS. Then again I suppose it depends on the number of concurrent streams. I only use one stream at a time and locally at that. No transcoding.
For $400 you could upgrade to a NAS capable of CPU hardware transcoding. Intel based CPU’s like the Intel Celeron J3355 in a Synology DS218+ work according to this:

I haven’t tested it myself though. I’m sure someone out there on the interwebs has…

I will not buy a NAS. I have a server here
All a little more complex…
I’ll see what I do. But thanks for your infos!! :ok_hand:

I can’t comment on what’s best for your setup or daily use, but as you already own a dedicated server I can see how a hardware upgrade might be the best sollution. I think all the new CPU’s support quick sync. For me the choice was also of of power usage, as most dedicated servers draw a lot of power even in standby, and my server is idle during the day.
Good luck in your upgrade adventure.

I use the thread here as it is very popular on the topic of dolby vision.

Same for me!

I have tried one file from this topic and it works, blue water.
But with another clip it’s just awful - completely lose colors.

I own Android 8 Sony XF9005

The Video you linked to plays perfectly directly in Plex on my LG C9 and from the Plex client on my Nvidia Shield. It’s really nice too!

I want to remind of Dolby Vision and TrueHD (Atmos)

Is there any news when and whether this can be expected? @sixones

If it helps, in the meantime I have also created a few examples with HD sound.

4K Single Layer Dolby Vision with AC3 and MLPA (TrueHD) and Chapters

4K Single Layer Dolby Vision with DTS-HD Master and Chapters

Yes I would be grateful if there is any news on TrueHD in mp4

I extracted a TrueHD track with the mkvtoolnix in a .mka Data and added it with the mp4box ta a SL DV MP4.

No idea what an FFID codec is? It cannot be played but Plex detected 7.1
