Has refresh rate switch ing been removed for Dolby Vision mp4 files in the latest beta on Shield 2019? Plex on my LG c7 plays fine, on the shield 2019 pro though the refresh rate stays at 59.940???
For Dolby Vision we have no choice but to disable refresh rate and resolution switching and rely on the mode you have set. Sadly the Android API’s don’t offer away for us to tell which mode supports Dolby Vision and which doesn’t.
In order to use Dolby Vision inside of Plex on the SHIELD 2019, you need too head into the Android settings on the SHIELD, then Display settings and select a mode that is Dolby Vision Ready
(it can be Dolby Vision and HDR10 Ready
). You can keep the refresh rate or / and resolution switching enabled inside of Plex, and we will switch to your original mode (or leave the mode untouched) when Dolby Vision content is played.
Can you not add a setting: use 23.976 for DV that people an use as an override?
This way it doesn’t affect other apps?
Regards.
Depending on your TV the mode will be different so it’s not something we can currently predict. Depending on your TV as well there will be a few modes that support 23.976Hz but don’t support Dolby Vision.
I’m hopeful in the future we can figure out away to determine which mode supports Dolby Vision, but for now the SHIELD requires you to use a Dolby Vision in the settings.
Nvidia also seems to be struggling with the DV implementation on the 2019. While they had a hotfix for color space that works well for my Lg C8, my Sony xbr 900f is giving them problems. I have to keep the color space switch off in order for DV to work properly
Manually add TV model?
LG oled support should be simple as you support that in the models native app.
The LG player handles everything, we have no control over it.
The issue here is that Android has only just got Dolby Vision support and until the Android platform can give us an indication of which modes support Dolby Vision, there is little we can do sadly.
If I play Dolby Vision videos, the LG TV is indeed in the DV mode. The setting “Real Cinema” is also deactivated in the viedo settings from LG. The video is running smoothly though. I do not understand that
When you play something on the LG TV, the LG player handles everything, the TV itself knows which mode it needs to use in order to get Dolby Vision support. On Android to switch the display mode, we use the Display Mode API
which gives us the resolution and refresh rate of every mode that the device / display supports and that we can switch too. However it doesn’t tell us which of those modes support HDR10 or Dolby Vision etc…
I’m looking into it, but at the moment the only solution is to use a Dolby Vision ready mode in the Display Preferences of the Android Settings, and use refresh rate / resolution switching in Plex to play non-DV content on the best mode.
So just be clear when playing HDR content is it best to have refresh rate switching and resolution switching set to on? for the best experience?
That’s right. For the best Dolby Vision experience with Plex, set the SHIELD’s display mode to use the best Dolby Vision Ready mode possible for your TV. Then enable refresh rate switching inside of Plex, this will allow all Dolby Vision content to play (the SHIELDs default display mode will be used) and all other content will use the best refresh rate available for that content.
Resolution switching can also be enabled, depending on your setup with the SHIELD, or you could use the SHIELD’s adaptive upscaling.
What about the Display.HdrCapabilities
API? Or will that only get you the capabilities of the active mode? If that is the case, how feasible would it be to cycle through a set of modes to figure out the capabilities of the display and cache them for future use?
It’s not an elegant solution by any means, but could it be a potential workaround until there is proper support for querying the HDR capabilities of all supported modes?
It only contains information about the active display sadly (regardless of the mode … I can be in a HDR10 mode and the HdrCapabilities
will still indicate Dolby Vision support). I have thought about doing that (until I discovered the previous mentioned problem), but some TV’s can have a lot of modes, and switching your TV / AVR mode can sometimes be quite slow and unpredictable if we try and do it rapidily we are likely to end up in a situation we don’t want to be in.
We will forward this request to NVIDIA and make sure they are aware of the user demand for it.
@sixones
I would very much like a refresh rate switching for Dolby Vision. My Workaround for DV Videos deactivate auto Display Switching Frame Rate und set the Shield manually to 23.976p. Otherwise I have sound dropuots with my HD Audio extractor. He always needs the original refresh rate.
Hope Plex and Nvidia make that possible someday . I would love it because I do not have to change everything anymore.
I downloaded the new hotfix for the Shield 2019 Pro today.
When I saw the changelog, I thought of the thread here.
Fourth HotFix (32.7.301.75):
- Resolves issue where “Match Frame Rate” was not working on Dolby Vision content in Netflix
It didn’t affect Plex on me… it was worth a try
With the Shield, when using the old player, refresh rate switching works fine for DV but not with the new player - can the code from the old player be added to the new player?
