Shield TV - Refresh Rate Switching Not Working

Does anyone else have problems with refresh rate switching in the current beta? The symptoms are similar to having it turned on in the public release. The refresh rate appears to change and the movie shows a single frame before freezing. The back button eventually brings up ‘Plex isn’t responding. Do you want to close it?’.

Sometimes a second or two of video plays and then Plex freezes.

Version 4.32.0.298
Updated on Aug 19, 2016
Size: 13.56 MB
Direct Play: Forced
Direct Stream: ON
Passthrough: Auto
Refresh Rate Switching: ON

I can send logs but under Privacy, I only have the option for Network Logging. Where can I find the option to email logs? I am currently signed in. I tried signing out and in again.

I have the exact same issue.

Same here.

I finally turned it off bc for me a few releases worked perfect then the next 2 it would freeze or not play until you turned it off.

That’s an old version. Try on v4.31.2 or whatever the latest beta is. Also Direct Play should be on Auto. You have to go to http://IPOFSHIELD:32500/logging for logs after enabling network logging but I’ve never got it to work. It does report back to Plex so if you list times and dates here they can know where to look.

I’ve changed Direct Play to Auto. I had some issue in the past where Plex was transcoding HEVC.

I have the same issue with 4.32.0.363 with passthrough on Auto or Disabled.

I have just tested on 4.32.0.363. Refresh rate switching is definitely the issue not passthrough for me. When I play a 2.0 LPCM 24bit with refresh rate switching enable it direct plays perfectly immediately. With refresh rate switching, it either pauses after a second with no sound, immediately freezes with no sound or video or the loading circle keeps spinning.

I actually haven’t had refresh rate switching issues ever, which I find weird, since I know so many people are having issues. I had passthrough audio enabled from the start as well, while people were recommending never to have both enabled at once. Now I’m running the beta, and I still haven’t experienced any issues with switching.

Could it be a matter of a combination of certain devices? I have my 16GB Shield TV connected to a Yamaha RX-V663 receiver over HDMI. I’m using the latest Plex Pass PMS and latest beta Android TV client.

It’s intermittent for me on the latest beta (latest PP PMS too). HDMI to reciever, HDMI to TV. RX-V675 (5.1). It seems to be something in the code as every other past release has been ok for refresh rate switching for me.

I think it is known that refresh rate switching does not work when your receiver is HDMI 2.0 and your tv is HDMI 1.x. I think Kodi has the same issue, but I’m not sure. If so, it might be an Android TV issue. A fix for this is to add a cheap 1.x HDMI splitter between the Shield and your receiver.
I hope they find a solution to this issue soon.
This is a thread on the geforce forums about this issue: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/901911/shield-android-tv/auto-refresh-rate-switching-not-working/6/

I connect Shield to a Yamaha YSP-2500 (HDMI 2.0) to a LG 65UH652T (HDMI 2.0a).

I don’t seem to have issues with SPMC.

I might try connecting the Shield to the TV directly as a test.

I installed SPMC yesterday and it won’t switch the refresh rate either. I guess I’ll just have to wait for an update.

Refresh rate switching is not enabled by default in SPMC. You have to enable it.

Hey all,

Just wanted to say that we are aware of some playback issue which arise when both Refresh Rate Switching is enabled, along with Passthrough. We’ve reported these to NVIDIA and are hoping we can get them resolved soon.

That seems odd as the version before 363 was working perfectly in my testing. Can we get the apk for that version?

All release APKs are available here: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/60585/plex-for-android#latest. If you identify a version that works vs doesn’t, we’d be very interested. We haven’t specifically touched this code for a few months…

This was a beta release Ian so wasn’t listed there. Whatever the release version was before .363 seemed to work more reliably vs the newest beta.

Refresh rate switching in the beta prior to the current beta version wasn’t working for me.

My amp is 1.4 so maybe that had something to do with it.

I’ve done some testing with version 4.32.0.446.

Shield connected to TV via soundbar: Refresh rate switching does not work with Passthrough Audio off or on auto. Yamaha YSP-2500 (HDMI 2.0) to a LG 65UH652T (HDMI 2.0a)

Shield connected directly to TV: Refresh rate switching works with Passthrough Audio off. I started and stopped various media over 20 times to switch the refresh rate between the system 60 Hz and the video frame rate. When I switched Passthrough Audio to Auto, the next movie I tried to watch froze Plex.

I’ve tested the same scenarios with SPMC and it seems to be working fine. I know SPMC is a different code base but I wanted to check that refresh rate switching + passthrough audio on my hardware was technically possible.
