Refresh rate switching for Android TV box (Android 5.1.1)

Hey guys,
Are you going to implement Refresh rate switching feature for the other Android devices as you did for Nvidia Android TV?
I would like to buy NVidia Shield but it’s not available in Russia, so I have to confine myself to Zidoo Android TV box but there is no such feature as Refresh rate switching in the Plex app for this device.

I know nothing about the box you’re mentioning here, but keep in mind the box itself has to support it.

Hi.
It does. At least when watching videos with Kodi refresh rate is being changed. Kodi has such feature in its settings, Plex doesn’t. That’s why i was asking it.

How do you know it gets changed in kodi? Do you see the actual refresh rate in overlay?

yep. i can see actual rate and it is in line with videofile frame-rate

Well it doesn’t really work in plex on the nvidia sheild. It works, sometimes, but sometimes if u pause then resume, or randonly it just stops working. The video will stutter several stimes a second.
But they dont care. Reported this bug a long time ago. Nothing happens.

Where did you report this at? I did ask a few other people I know with a shield to test this out and they said they didn’t see any of this behavior. So hopefully if you can point me towards where it was reported we can try and find actionable information to pass on.

@jmckee No idea. Don’t remember. Probably in the google tv section.
But I am willing to send a log or something. Don’t really know how to report a bug cause when i do it in bugs section theres no response and it’s not fixed.

23.976hz material and transcoded audio causes inconsistent behavior. Not always in the same spot but just watching a 20 minutes show I will run into the issue at least 3 times and a pause/play toggle with fix it for a time. It’s been mentioned (by me and others) in multiple threads. Not that I have a view of the code, but it feels like the video is waiting for the transcoded audio to sync up. Results in stutter/frame drops.

I’ve reported other issues on this forum and directly to Ian or Antoniolg and they haven’t been addressed either.

  1. Subtitles in MKV files always cause transcoding.
  2. Forced subs are not forced on by default.
  3. VC-1 video only works with LPCM audio movies. Any movie with DTSHD or TrueHD audio refuses to start playback.
  4. Pass through audio only works with a receiver. Connected directly to a TV that supports DD and DTS (tested with Kodi on same Shield and TV) and you get no audio if you have pass through audio enabled and force direct play on. Direct play auto causes an audio transcode and causes the 23.976 stutter. Need a “force pass through” option.
  5. The play button (hdmi-cec remote) does nothing when you are highlighting a movie or episode and it is very annoying.
  6. Everytime plex switches to 23.976 and back a toast pops up saying “headphones disconnected”
  7. Episode names don’t appear on the playback OSD. Just S01E03. No title. Of course the OSD is missing a lot of things (cover art, direct play status, codecs, usable FF/REW).

6) Everytime plex switches to 23.976 and back a toast pops up saying “headphones disconnected”
Seen this on my friends Samsung TV where his shield is connected to. It does not happen on mine (prolly cause its connected to a receiver). TV is LG.

But i think you are correct in the transcoded audio causing stutters. This is extremely annoying and pretty much renders plex on shield useless.
Another thing. When i play a track that DTS-HD ma it should play DTS cause plex cant do this, but no. Its transcoding the sound to DD. This used to work on the shield. But they broke it, and no one listens.

So, as i understood, rate switching is working on Nvidia Shield. With some questions, but at least it works.
Question with regard of implementing this feature to other Android-based TV boxes remains opened.

I believe you are right about the “headphones disconnected”. I have another shield hooked to receiver in my theater but I rarely use Plex on it… since Plex is crap with refresh rate switching and doesn’t support TrueHD yet (and the other interface issues are annoying… but I use Kodi on it. I did some testing with Plex awhile back and I don’t remember seeing it there.

With the latest update Plex still doesn’t pass through audio to my TVs. I haven’t tested DTS-MA in the theater. I will later to see if anything else in that list is fixed and then message Ian.

It “works” in theory. Other android based TV boxes would need to be using 6.0+ and also have the proper kernel code (and not mess with the 6.0 api). I don’t believe their are any other boxes that meet those requirements. The Nexus Player does and is a true “Android TV” device, but I don’t believe Plex support refresh rate switching on it for whatever reason.

Latest version still has all the previously mentioned bugs.

Why only 6.0+? Lollipop can do it as well. As i was saying refresh rate switching works perfectly when I use Kodi.
I’m not talking about Android 4.x.x where this feature is not possible at all due to OS restrictions, but 5.x can do it and does it nicely, so why Plex don’t implement it.
Hey guys, anyone from Plex Support? your comments would be highly appreciated.

I don’t believe 23.976 support came until 6.0 (backported to the Shield in 5.x/2.0 update). In 5.x (5.1?) the Nexus/Shield(1.x) only supported 24.00hz. There is a different, but it isn’t huge depending on the display and person.

@drhill 23.976 is another story  i’m generally speaking of rate switching ability.

My receiver now sometimes detect dts-hd ma material. But not always. This is with the latest update of plex.
All the other bugs are still there, so, Plex on android is still useless.
@dmdrl Asking for plex support to respond is like wishing for hell to freeze over. remember, this is a free product… Oh wait…

@MWThrane, love your sarcasm :wink:
why then there is dedicated hive for plexpass users? just as pure formality?

Its not a stupid way to get users to pay for beta testing products…
