Double subtitles (VTT) on Apple TV

This has been a problem for months, so there isn’t a specific version of Plex attached. My Apple TV is the 4K model, tvOS 15.6.

When using the new player only (old player works fine), external VTT files cause transcoding and are burned in, while the Apple TV still display them just fine, on top of the burned in ones.

Specific use case: movies purchased from Rifftrax.com (hi all msties!) come with an external vtt file.

Workarounds: use the old player or convert the vtt to srt before adding to Plex.

I didn’t include logs because I figure this is an easy one: Plex Server thinks the vtt format is not supported by the device, but it is.

If I was incorrect let me know and I’ll post logs.

Thanks for your attention.

is it possible to get a copy of one of your VTT subtitle files since if they are external

Sure! Sorry for the delay. I’ve added it to the original post.

I have the same issue, and have posted about it here: Apple TV App Won’t Stop Showing Subtitles - #9 by duffman1132

Thanks for confirming it’s not just me
Your screenshots depict exactly what I experience.

You may want to follow the other thread as well, as I have just uploaded a sample for @BigWheel to have a look at and hopefully diagnose.

I don’t have the issue in the other thread. It seems like two different things to me.

From what I can see if you have external VTT subs enabled it shows the subtitles twice as described in this topic. if you have them disabled it still shows them as described in other topic.

From what I was told about VTT they are intended/designed as internal subs only which is why the Apple TV app has trouble with them, so our Apple player team need to figure out how to handle them when external.

Thanks for the followup

After TVOS update to 16.0, situation unchanged.
