Since the new plex version recently came out I wanted to share some of my thoughts about what I think about it.
First off I noticed that if you play a video and put it in fullscreen it would go into exclusive fullscreen instead of windowed fullscreen and it would flicker every time I went clicked outside of the app and also taking screenshots in exclusive apps is quite annoying too. wish there was a possibility to change that.
Second the design is something I have to get used to. Certain buttons like “clean bundles” and “optimize database” are hidden in settings and scan library is unnecessary many clicks away but it’s not bad since the functionality is still there and that you can customize the UI more is also a plus.
Though one thing that got definitely worse is the possibility to config the player. In the Plex Media Player you could go into the TV mode and edit certain settings like exclusive audio and audio channel mode and whatnot. This is no longer possible with the new UI and the config file in the appdata folder got changed completely too and the guide here is not updated yet.
One good thing about the new app is that they fixed the media hotkey functionality. It finally works even if you don’t have the window focused. No need for this autohotkey script anymore.
Also this download feature seems to finally give a working sync feature to the desktop client though I wish there was a way to go to the file location in the file browser and of course set the download location which was already said to be in a future update here.
I think in the end the new app has more downs than ups but I don’t know the exact dev backgrounds but the discontinuation of HTPC and the disconnection of windows scaling and whatnot probably will give the devs more time to work on actual features. Though if it was a good decision to switch away from HTPC is another topic but since the numbers say less and less people use HTPC maybe it would be doomed in the future anyways but since I’m not an HTPC user I don’t really care.
Maybe the devs can finally look into stuff like removing the yellow play button when the video is paused or expanding the search function to also search in summaries (artist, episode, … etc) or allow alternative names for artists maybe (foreign languages)
