Me and my friends do regularly record skating which we then share in oir group. Currently we are using dropbox to share these but space there is running out.
Because im already saving all our videos to my plex media server I tought we could share the videos via plex. I convinced some to also create a plex account and shared the library with them.
However the issue is now that my friends are only able to watch the videos but they can’t download it. Downloading works from my account but not for my friends.
This kind of limits the usefulness for us because I know that others also like to edit the movies.
Is this a bug that the download is not working from my friends account? Do I need to allow this somewhere?
Or is this feature just not implemented?
it not a bug, it is intentional that only the server owner can download from their server.

No, it's meant to be like that and this won't be implemented by Plex. This is due to copyright red tape, once your media becomes a download it becomes too easy to redistribute.
I don’t see a copyright issue here as I’m the author of the video.
Maybe an option could be added to each files metadata that says this file is ok for distribution.
Or alternatively download could be activated just for homevideos.
Hope this feature will be implemented one day. It would be so much easier for end users than to mess up with own cloud, emby …
I don’t see why this would be any different than mobile device sync for shared libraries so I don’t think the “Copyright Red Tape” applies. As log as the file is being accessed via a “Plex” user that can sync, they should also have the option to download. I would like to see this enable “Server to Server” sync as well.
The download option was never meant to be used. It was a feature that existed before sync but was never removed, that’s why no client has that ability except Plex Web, which was the original client to have that feature. It is more likely that the ability will be removed from the admin before it is added to others. If you want to share files, you’ll need to find another way. There are many options to do this so it shouldn’t be hard to find one.
