Why can't "normal" users download photos from either client application or web client.

Hi,

I find it frustrating that I cannot easily share with the family the photos we have on the server.
If I login as the main user/admin on the web client, I can at least download photos … however, if I try that with my “Family” user I can’t. There is no option in the settings to give that user permission to download photos.

It seems this is a very necessary feature.

Sure I can cloud sync photos, but I don’t want to inflict this roundabout way of getting stuff on my family as that means
they will need to a) have a dropbox account etc and b) have it linked to cloud sync …

My server IS the cloud, I don’t need another cloud …very messy.

Why can we not give permissions to download … seems simple

Anyone have any comment on this … positive or negative ?

Plex is not meant to be file sharing application is why. and though i understand you are not trying to share hollywood movie files like bittorrent with the rest of the world many people will and it is a proverbial legal “can of worms” we would rather not bother getting involved in right now. ( I am not going to discuss legalities in various countries or the differences legally between streaming and downloading )

We get that your home movies and photos are not copyrighted and may do something so you can share those in the future but we do not have anything to share at the moment.

Surely is can be constrained to share only on the local network? Photos are the only real requirement as they are static, everything else is streamed to clients as designed …

Actually, this is incorrect. As a photographer who has been dabbling in it for a while now, the maker (photographer/videographer) is the legal copyright owner of all of the media he takes. At least this is the way it is in most of Europe, and North America.

Each state in the US has differing laws, but they all agree that the maker is the copyright owner. You may need to get express written permission to use someone’s likeness or property for commercial use, but the maker owns the rights to the photo after that ageeement is signed.

That said, using Plex to share snap shots with family and friends is a good idea. We just need to wait for the apps themselves to get the functionality put in. (PS, I would love to use Plex as a method of of sharing even some of my prize winning shots, but there are other avenues that are geared toward this specifically.)

Good answer. Totally agree. Copyright belongs to the photograher … I have no issue with sharing my photos with a plex user I set up …

What would work for me is, if there was some way of marking the files that you want to share, i.e put them in a playlist, then marking the playlist for share … that way, familiy members can go to their plex client and download the photos to their local machines.

Since plex is serving up everything else, why not photos? The alternative for me is to add another (say nfs) server on the machine just to serve up photos … seems a wast of time, effort and security, when it can be done in plex. Sure I can put them on “the cloud”, but why? when PMS is my cloud.
