Downloaded Music on Android does not Download and/or Play

I’m currently running my Plex server off my tower which does not stay on 24/7. As a result I was excited to use the download feature of Plexamp. But I was disappointed when I tried to play from the downloaded playlist and it would only play though a few songs and that was it. Upon further investigation I discovered that only about a dozen or so songs actually downloaded from a playlist of just over 200.

Did a little experimentation and found that if I kept the phone screen on and kept focus on the download status page until the entire playlist downloaded. Then it worked and would play though the whole playlist no problem.

Fast forward about a week, the playlist suddenly does not work anymore. I hit shuffle and it rapidly skips through every song without playing any of them. I refreshed the download and now double the space is taken up on my phone but at least the playlist works again.

Fast forward again about a week and the above issue repeats. Refreshed the playlist and forgot to leave the screen on so it only got about a dozen songs before it stopped.

As I’m typing this out I had some suggestions pop up on the right indicating I might have a similar issue that has existed since early 2017…!

Any plans to address this in the near future or am I switching back to iTunes and my iPad?

It might be an issue with app permissions. Do you limit the apps that can run in the background?

I tested this yesterday with my Android phone and it kept downloading songs even when the phone screen locked. You could try a workaround in the meantime.

To recover the space:
Try going to the downloads tab of Plexamp, deleting all of the downloads.
If this doesn;t fix the issue try fully uninstalling the app and reinstalling it.

To download the songs properly:
Check your app permissions for Plexamp and apps in general.
Set the phone screen to never lock, or not to lock while charging.
Once you have all of your songs downloaded, you can switch it back.

One last thing: make sure under Settings>Downloads>Prefer Downloaded Media you select Always. In my opinion, this setting should be the default.

I’d look at a log, but I suspect you’re running into an issue where we were downloading into the cache area on Android (since fixed). Just delete the downloaded playlist and re-download and it’ll download into the proper area (and you can now select external SD card as well).
