Downloads sucks and doesn’t work “Error downloading item”

Digital silence.

@Speedst3r Your logs indicate that you’ve chosen a subtitle track, but it can’t be used as is so it wants to burn it into the video, but since you have that off, it can’t do anything so the Download fails. Turn on transcoding or try without choosing the subtitle.

@PlexJB You haven’t provided any logs for me to look at to see what’s going wrong.

Server log:
Caught exception trying to stream file [server path to file] write: protocol is shutdown

Android log:
[HttpServer] Client closed the channel

It’s all there is.

However, recreating the issue is really very easy.

Create a music library with say 30 GB flac files

Creat a playlists of said library

Try and download it.

I’m going to need more than that to track down the problem.

See above

how about reading the PLETHORA of posts telling you downloads are broken for months and months and months and months and…

…like test it yourselves for a few mins maybe?

Just listing 1 line of the log doesn’t help. There are a few issues we are already looking into. Without the entire log I can’t say if what you are experiencing is one of those or something new.

That helps. Yes, there is a known issue we are looking at for downloading a lot of items like a huge playlist. Try clearing all previous Downloads and download just 1 song. If it works, then you do not have a general Downloads issue.

In 2022 30 GB is a huge playlist?

Seriously?

For music, that’s like 1,000 songs.

Ok we’re getting somewhere.

Plex downloads has a GB limit?

Could you please point to it in your features list so buyers of your product can make an informed decision whether or not to proceed with their purchase?

I see nothing here for example

Nothing here says oh by the way:
‘Yes, there is a known issue we are looking at for downloading a lot of items like a huge playlist.’

And huge playlist is tbc but somewhere between (maybe) 0-30 GB or less.

It’s a bug. We don’t list bugs in our support articles.

Come on guys. You’re annoying a lot of users with this, that’s self evident. Please cut the nonsense and get on top of fixing downloads as a priority.

Except I haven’t?

Unless the Plex Android client is just trying to grab all streams? I have quality set to Original, no transcoding.

Ah sorry. I saw an error and read it wrong. The error is something I’ve not seen before so I’m checking with others to see if they know what it is.

08-14 12:56:31.330 w: [OfflineTranscodeDecisionManager] Error in media decision: server response is null.

My guess is that you did not give the app permission to your storage. Can you check that?

Could you expand on this please?
(1) is this bug documented somewhere externally?
(2) what is/are the quantative limitations (approximation of number of files and/or size as applicable would be helpful).
(3) how long has it been known about?
(4) what’s the est. resolution date?

Thanks.

@Speedst3r The error I saw was not enough to identify the issue. I’m going to need the full set of zipped logs from the app and the server.

@PlexJB 1 - no. 2 - It’s not a limitation. There is something that goes wrong when you try to download a large playlist or multiple lists in quick succession. We haven’t identified the cause yet but the more you try to download, the more it fails. 3 - We’ve seen the symptom for a little while but it’s not consistent. For some it downloads really slow, for some, not at all, and some claim it works. 4 - We don’t have an ETA as we haven’t identified the cause. We will get things fixed as soon as we identify them. We’re not letting issues sit because we won’t fix them, we don’t know what to fix at this time.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply, appreciate it.

I know my use case seems unusual to you but about the only time a get to listen to music these days is my 60 min roundtrip commute. I literally burn through hours of music a week and it’s super convenient having everything offline on microsd.

I’d really love part of that to be capitalising on my Plex investment.

I don’t think I’m alone in this sort of use case or similar.

Is this issue the reason why plexamp is limited to 24 hours?

It’s probably not helpful, but an observation when running Plex on my phone. When the screen timeout is reached it seems to partially dim rather than switching off. Could this issue be related to sleep timers or similar?

Or is it perhaps just a good ol’ fashioned memory leak?

(apologies if my comments above got a bit snarky btw. I reread them and hands up, in the ultimate of first world problems, the frustration of weeks of trying to get downloads to succeed got the better of me)
