Sure, downloads is the new sync. Better quality if you wish, less transcoding…
But the options to limit X items of the selection or only not viewed items is missing, or I can’t find them.
Imagine a tv series. You are downloading new episodes on your server, and you want to have just the latest non viewed ones on your tablet to watch on the go. So you choose sync, last 5 items not viewed. And you would be sure that you’ll always have latest episodes ready to watch, no matter when you add them to your server. The sync task will do it’s job.
Now it will just download everything. No filters at all.
Or arrange a smart playlist with all the movies you haven’t watched yet, sorted by release year, then sync 10 unwatched items to watch them on the go. As soon as you watch one, is gone and a new one will be synced. Always something to watch!
Now with downloads, you download everything. No limits. Until you run out of space?
If there are filters like the ones on mobile sync, I can’t find them.
It’s there at the Show level. Choose to Download a show and you will see those options.
That’s not possible. We are discussing if adding this would be possible.
As a work around, if you edit your smart playlist (or create a new one) to include a limit of 10, then Downloads would work as you expect. Changing the limit should should also reflect back on how many gets Downloaded.
I just checked the site’ download options. You can download all, most recent or not viewed episodes, but only 1, 3 or 5. You can’t choose how many besides that.
So I chose 5 not played.
Then… When should I delete them? Never, 1 day, 1 week, next update? If I want them to be deleted once watched and get new ones, should I chose next update?
Also curious about the ambiguity here. I have one single usage as @helpman described and I can’t imagine many folks who have other usages.
Sync X unwatched and delete automatically when watched just made sense - you guys did it right the first time but you just needed to fix a few bugs…
This is a classic Plex move where you erase something that worked great but just needed some fine tuning (like Photo upload…) and then maybe replace it with something that doesn’t even do at least what the original feature did. It makes no sense and sends people running away for alternative solutions.
If there’re any help document explaining the options, I couldn’t find it.
But so far, Downloads seems like a step backwards compared with mobile sync…
Also you can set 1 quality option for all of them.
Maybe I want my movies to be downloaded at a bigger quality than some series, just to save some space. But with downloads you can only set a quality option for all your content?
The bugs in Sync were not easily fixable. Things like being able to Sync without a transcode would almost not happen. A revamp of the feature was needed.
Downloads is meant to be a simpler, quicker feature compared to Sync. Yes, there were some sacrifices. The specific option of being able to download more items is being addressed and will be available in a future update.
You can change the quality in the Download settings page which will affect all future Downloads. It was decided not to have this for individual downloads so that the feature could be quick and easy.
Whatever reason, it’s not simpler and easier, it’s not documented at all, still no idea about what to do to delete the downloaded ones when they are watched.
It’s not a revamp, but a mutilated version. There’s nothing worth mentioning as better, just “cant’s”.
Can’t download the number of items you want.
Can’t choose the quality for each. (I don’t need the same quality to enjoy Lord of the rings than spongebob squarepants)
Can’t update them automatically deleting the already watched ones. (So the available space is not optimized at all)
BUT you can download it full size, that’s great if you had a huge space available on your mobile device where you are downloading them… Sure.
It’s not better, it’s a mutilated mobile sync, at least as we can see now.
When something is changed, it fix and improve, not fix by downgrading/removing features.
Not happy at all with the new feature.
And I still don’t known how to make it delete watched downloaded episodes to get fresh ones when updating.
DELETE EPISODES AFTER PLAYING:
Never
After a day
After a week
On next refresh
I’ll bet the downloads are the same. Next update would deleted them next time it checked for downloads and the others would set a delay in case you wanted to watch it multiple times.
Thank you! I’ll try checking next refresh
You know, live tv might be useful for English speakers, but when English is not your native language… All that option is useless.
It would be great to have pluto.tv channels available through ones, though.
