I run a DS415Play, almost exclusively for PLEX. Over the past year, it lags. I will be attempting to load a video, perhaps on my phone or AppleTV and it takes forever. I was doing some investigations today, was watching a video, checked the CPU usage sure enough, nearly 100%. Stopped video, CPU usage dips down to 25ish%. Restart video, jumps back up to nearly 90+%. Ive always kept PLEX UTD - running version 1.21.0.3711. DSM is UTD 1.21.0.3711. Is it that my NAS is just too old to keep up these days or is PLEX too bloated of a program for my 5 year old NAS? TIA for any comments/feedback…
For starters you could check out the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard. This should show you not only how much CPU/memory/network load you got but also what’s happening “under the hood” – namely if the video requires transcoding and if so what parts of the file are being transcoded etc.).

im thinking its the transcoding of 1080p…maybe time for an upgrade…
I have a brand new synology 918+ and i was getting high cpu loads. I added a plex pass to take advantage of full hardware encoding and that made all the difference for me. I think its also worth making sure if you want to use full encoding, the NAS fully supports it.
Thats what I was thinking too old to keep up…
what would you move to a 420+?
