DS918+ "this server is not powerful enough to convert video"

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2737
Player Version#:
Plex Web Version#: 4.22.3
Synology NAS#: DS918+
DSM#: DSM 6.2.3-25423 (8GB)

Upgraded from a Synology DS718+ to DS918+
DS 918+ showing error “this server is not powerful enough to convert video.” ???!!!
Supposedly they are the same NAS with just number of bays more.
I am really sad and dont know how to proceed.
IF anyone can guide to get my logs and advice what I am doing wrong.
FYI I did no change to settings just swapped and migrated to new NAS.
Also tried using a fresh install, but old files ran on the DS718+ without transcoding.
FYI some files are .avi and they no longer run on DS918+ normally, but used to run on DS718+.
Also if use any subtitle other then .srt I get the error message. Infact any use of subtitles uses higher CPU and stutters. Also some .srt dont run at all (e.g. .ass, .subs, etc.).

I tried deselectling “Disable video stream transcoding” from “Transcoder” and it seems to work but uses 100 CPU. However this was not the case before. Even with this option selected all videos including .avi and .rmvb ran normally.

But then again some run on mobile app and TV but not laptop browser. Again some only run on mobile app but not TV or web browser.

I am completely stumped and honestly sad as a great deal of money went on the upgrade.

Any suggestion would be welcome and apologies for posting in the wrong thread earlier (I assume it was wrong and praying this thread is correct)

Please guide me to get all necessary details so the community experts can suggest accordingly.

Please help

Many thanks for your input.
I completely understand what you are saying.
What I am upset about is my DS718+ used to handle all these and never popped up this error, even with Transcoding on/off.
Also what is surprising is .avi, .rmvb and some .mp4 are having difficulty in playback and the error pops up. Most importantly mobile app is playing most things but web browser not all and TV also not all.

Can you advice one more thing - if I enable video transcoding, it is taking up a lot of CPU usage. How can I minimize that? Is it advisable to purchase Plex Pass and why now all of a sudden is this happening. Before I could get by all playback without much HW transcoding.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out.

Finally any way I can get a lifetime pass for a discounted price or anyway I can try out just to see how the pass works without purchasing?

Thanks in advance

Thanks trumpy you have a been a great help.
I will try the month package just to check.
But it really saddens me why on the new unit, why these things never popped on the old 718+.
Also I just tried to play Avengers End Game - worked on the Laptop browser with .srt and evrything but when I tried on my Samsug TV the same “error” popped there. Weird

These never happened before.
Can I help you with any logs or anything so you can identify more precisely? If you have the time and if you can direct me taking the logs.
In meantime I might give the plex plass a go…

Her you go the requested files.

Thanks in advance…

Also I am about to try running a 4K video in all screens to see which one plays back without transcoding. Hoping it will play Direct Stream…

And can you give some idea - how come some are playing on mobile or web or TV?? Not all are playing everywhere… FYI my bandwidth is fine as they are all wired.

Verbose off
Also for note - unfortunately the media’s dont even start playing.
The error appears immediately when I click on any media.
Below screenshot and the files again for your review. Also I played the Initial D file about 30 mins before I made post to you.

SO I also tried turning for “Disable video transcode” and attempted to play a 4K.
It did start after some time, however the CPU was at 99% and when I tried to fast forward it was stuck. Similarly any transcode I do the CPU goes upto over 85% even for small, low or medium def and size files.

Please advise if this high CPU usage can be managed with Plex Pass as in HW transcoding?

Thanks Trumpy
As mentioned the files dont even start to play, so cant actually create a log. Also verbose if off I guarantee.

Can you review the second one I just posted.

New log tried playing few files hope this will show up something anything…
If not we will roll over to tomorrow… thanks for your time…

But if you suggest Plex Pass + HW Transcoding might help and put less stress on CPU I will give it a shot.

Well noted and shall pursue.
And before closing for the day, one more thing is bugging me.
If I am using direct play then “the server does not have much to do” right?
Then why is not the DS918+ powerful enough to do direct play??

any ideas??

Also do you think the DS918+ could be faulty… FYI its 3 days old

you are awesome
will update back with Plex Pass results
Hoping it will show some considerable differences…

@trumpy81 another quick query
Does HW transcoding (through plex pass) reduce stress on the CPU or is it the same?
ANd will longer CPU (transcoding) hurt my NAS long term life?

great notes.
right now without HW trasncoding my CPU is around 88%
Hoping the plex pass can reduce it considerably.

Thanks I shall get a pass over the weekend to test out…

So I got the PLex Pass and seems the HW transcoding is putting much less stress on CPU and directing to GPU. Still some files hit the CPU to push beyond 60-70%. But I can live with that, considering 4K transcoding is not taking any CPU even at 12Mbps…

One item though troubling me is some particular files are failing either when fast forwarded or failed to start at all. I am attaching the logs and Files names below for your expert advice again:

Below one completely fails to start unless I put down from 720p or lower

This one crashes with video error if I try to skip scenes or rewind

But mostly I much appreciate you advice and do let me know if there is something I can do in return… Except lending money
