Difficulty transcoding DS918+ and PMS 1.11.1.4760

I just purchased the DS918+ with 4gb ram running Plex 1.11.1.4760. I am not getting having near the experience you all are with this. I really love Plex and Synology, but right now I am really dissatisfied with the results. DVDs play perfectly, but I bought this to play BlueRays I transcoded with DVDFab. I used pass through for the quality to preserve the native quality of the blueray. When I attempt to play though my Plex app on PlayStation 4 the video is very choppy. The quality is great when it plays, but it plays for about 4 to 6 seconds and then pauses, starts, pauses.

I have the x64 version so my cpu is only around 50%. My network is wired all the way through. And I manually select original quality when playing my movie. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.Line

Verbose logging in isolation doesn't help. Verbose is also too low a level for first-stage debugging. That having been said, seeing it be where expected and then falling below real-time means something else is involved.

To debug this properly:

  1. Turn off Verbose and playback until it stutters for about 15 seconds.
  2. Stop playback and wait 15 more for everything to get into the log files.
  3. Gather the logs (settings - server - help - download logs)
  4. Get the XML (hover over the item - Get Info - View XML)
  5. Post the XML and the ZIP file here.

We can then take a look at what's happening

Attached are the files you requested. Thank you for looking. The movie is Terminator Salvation, but its matched wrong just so I could separate a few different files while I was trying to check exporting with different profiles in DVDFab to see if that made a difference.

#5

Thank you for the logs.

your logs show that PMS is working perfectly on the NAS and indicating it's at least 6x, almost 7x, real-time playback requirement and then drops out.

I strongly recommend you stop using the beta for now. Please download, and keep, 1.10.1 from Public. I have seen this behavior and it's being investigated.

It is not clear if it's an issue with the player (Microsoft) or not. Something is wrong as playback stalls but transcoding is normal.

I should have tried this earlier, but perhaps it will help you with the issues you said you were seeing and investigating. I focused on this one movie just so I could always have the same source so if I saw any differences I would know it was the profile or the server, not the video. Once I transcoded other movies using DVDFab (Alien Covenant, Blade Runner) they transcoded perfectly. I will try to download the version you pointed out to see if that makes a difference with the movie I was just trying and post back if its any difference. Its a shame I spent most of the day troubleshooting based on this one movie, and the issue is likely with the movie, but at least this got me reading more and learning more both about my device and Plex :). I will be able to test the downgrade tomorrow.

With your help I am in love with Plex and my Synology again!!! Thank you again for your help.

@PureKaine

I have split us out of the other thread. We are free here to resolve the problem without bothering others.

I'm having the same experience.
I.e. I recently got a 918+ with upgraded memory to 16GB and I've been installing the latest Plex Pass version of the server onto the Synology.

I'm playing 4K movies with subtitles enabled, I'm monitoring overall CPU load which hovers around 40% (never goes over 50%). The Plex process itself isn't taking up more than 24-25% CPU load. RAM use is way below that at around 15%.

Yet, I get a message when starting to play a video that the server is not powerful enough and then a few seconds of playback followed by a pause and so on.

In terms of connectivity, it's a wired gigabit network and I've tried a number of devices, i.e. Shield TV, Mac, iPad etc. and also transcoding down to 1080p etc.

Not really understanding why CPU load doesn't just increase to meet the requirements.

Did downgrading to 1.10.1 work for you?

#9

Downgrading did not help. There seems to be an issue with VC1 encoded movies. I am having a problem with 10000 BC which is VC1 just like Terminator Salvation. Sorry for the delay in posting, I was trying to finish the transition between my 416 and my 918, and then upgrading to higher drives.

VC-1 is software decoding only right now.

The transcoder team is waiting for the HW fix to work its way from the volunteer who fixed it -> Intel -> FFMPEG core . Once it goes 'upstream', the team can pull it down . When that happens, they'll be able to work on implementing VC-1 HW decoding (e.g. VC-1 (hw) -> H.264 (hw) )

#11

Just checking back in to see if any progress was made with VC1 or if there was an anticipated time line?

#12

When there is, it will be in the release notes. That's all I can tell you. Any codecs will be added to coincide with normal releases
