I’m trying to setup a newly acquired DS920+ and getting tons of conflicting information. Can someone tell me the best method of installing to take advantage of all the features my device can support.
The main features that I am hoping to take advantage of are HW transcoding HEVC files when I am on a slower connection outside of the house and HDR tone mapping when I am watching media on a supported device in my local network.
Can someone tell me if it is possible to achieve this on the DS920 and if so what install method and additional configuration is required.
tl;dr
Should I install with the package from plex.tv or should I use docker?
Do I still need to go into Preferences.xml and add specify the VaapiDriver?
Do I still need to expose the HEVC license from my device to plex somehow?
Should I give up and just run plex on my windows machine lol
If you really want to add the Docker overlay, you still can, and remove it at any time
There are changes coming in PMS which you’ll want to see.
You won’t need to expose any HEVC licensing. PMS & your PlexPass already include that licensing.
If you have PGS subtitles which need to be burned-in all the time, you’ll want a stronger CPU than the Synology. If you have text-based (SRT) then those are sent as a 3rd stream with no burn-in required.
Regarding a fresh setup, may I recommend you give a read here to help avoid some pitfalls.
I went ahead and set everything up using this method and it seems to be working fairly well. The only file I am having an issue playing back, transcoding in chrome, is a 4k HDR10 file. It won’t play at all with tone mapping enabled, but with it off it works no problem.
Are there any additional steps required to get tone mapping to work as expected?
What you’ll find is PMS outputs H.264 10-bit which browsers can tone map on their own. All the Plex apps will handle 10-bit H.264 as appropriate for the device.
Is there still a benefit to using the Docker method?
I have the DS920+ and have been waiting a while for the HDR Tone Mapping to be supported in hardware. I check the forums every few months or so for any updates!
I was considering following the steps in the FAQ.28 until I found this post. I don’t often use remote streaming so hadn’t noticed any changes but have just tested using my iPhone and Google Chrome, both converting a 4K HDR movie to 1080p and the colours look fine! Just wanted to confirm, Thanks
