Ok, after some more digging, it appears that plex naming/sorting was based on lucky co-incidences of the file naming and/or the ‘premium music library’ features, not the tags themselves.
0/ Added the text “(TAG)” to the end of embedded trackname, album title, album artist, and track artist
1/ Changed cover art to be different for embedded and in the folder. (resolution 600x600)
1/ Plex dance.
2/ Added files using Premium Plex library, made sure ‘Use Embedded Tags’ was set
3/ Artwork (from folder) was shown, but no tag information, so redid plex dance
4/ Added files using Basic Music Library, made sure ‘Use Embedded Tags’ was set
5/ No change (same as 3)
I am also chiming in here to say that DSF file tags are totally ignored. while other file types such as FLAC are found and used.
I hate auto-tagging, so have every library set to use embedded tags that I maintain in each file. In my HD library I name albums and the directory structure with the source type e.g. “Scary Monsters (SACD 2.0 DSF)” and while the FLAC HD Tracks versions show names like “Scary Monsters (HD Tracks 24-192)” the DSF one does not, instead it is inconsistent either showing “Scary Monsters” or “Scary Monsters (Sacd)”. Where it gets either of those names I don’t know because the library and agents are set up to use embedded only. All tags are IDv3.23, changing the version of tag makes no difference.
Example below. Heathen has both 2.0 and 5.1 DSF versions but show as the same, Let’s Dance is 2.0 DSF. The ones showing correctly are all FLAC.
Another user here confirming DSF embedded tags are not working correctly in spite of ‘embedded tags’ being chosen in settings… Plex stubbornly refuses to show/assign album or year but does show everything else including the embedded cover art. Please fix this.
I’ve confirmed tags are correct on dozens of albums. Plex handles all identically and cannot access year or album in any situation. I use ID3v2.3 for all tags.
Plex does not read the metadata from my DSF files either. Is there a reason the Plex team seems to be treating this as a missing feature rather than as a bug? It is most definitely a bug, and probably a very easy one to fix.
Just to add one more data point, when I add DSF files to a standard music library, my albums are added as “unknown artist”, “unknown album”, with no album art. Oddly, it does seem to get the disk number correct.
When I add the same files to a premium music library, the tracks are assigned album and track names, and album art. I believe it is getting this from last.FM instead of the embedded metadata, as the album art and album names don’t always match what’s embedded in the file.
The metadata in my files is originally inserted by sacd_extract when I rip my SACDs. I then use Mp3Tag to add album art and make any adjustments.
Same here, DSF tags are ignored causing incorrect album merges and loads of [Unknown Artist] and [Unknown Album] entries. Files are meticulously tagged using Mp3Tag, with cover art as well. Plex Music is currently unusable to me.
