DSM 6.1 Upgrade: DS212j

I have a DS212j running DSM 6.0.2-8451 Update 9 with PMS 0.9.16.6.

When trying to install the recent Version: 6.1-15047, I get the “Plex will be disabled” message. Based on ChuckPA’s post about PMS compatibility with DSM 6.1, it sounds like I might be out of luck. Does this mean I have to choose between updating DSM or using Plex?

Thanks for all the help!

Unfortunately you are out of luck. The reason for this is because the DS212j has a processor which PMS does’t support any more due to lack of CPU performance.

If you wish to continue with PMS 0.9.16.6, which is the lowest albeit not really supportable version needed, you can try after you’ve read and considered what I’m about to suggest.

I do not have access to the ARMv5 packages but we can use your existing 0.9.16.6 to construct a one-off 0.9.16.6 package to try if you are willing.

What I can attempt to do for you is recreate the SPK (unless you already have it???) for PMS 0.9.16.6. I would prefer if you already have a known-good file but I can create one from your installed package.

What would transpire is:

  1. We take a copy of your “/var/packages/Plex Media Server” directory in the AppStore
  2. I recreate a Synology package SPK for your machine.
  3. You stop PMS
  4. Upgrade to DSM 6.1 (if this is what you want)
  5. Start PMS
  6. If PMS fails to start, we examine why. If fully disabled by DSM, we now attempt to use the SPK I created.

This is where it gets risky

  1. Uninstall the PMS package
  2. Install the SPK I created for you
  3. Attempt to start it.

The reasons this might fail, which are fairly high, are because of the runtime libraries. Synology should have addressed this since they are giving you the ability to upgrade to DSM 6.1. We should be able to make this one-off package but I cannot stress enough,… This is not guaranteed. You might lose PMS functionality entirely.

The decision is yours. The ARMv5 is not a strong machine. The added ‘weight’ of DSM 6.1 and PMS might be too much. This is a subjective decision only you can make.

Wow, thanks so much for your help and suggestions, I really appreciate it!

I’d like to keep my DSM up to date so I don’t run into security issues. The primary purpose of the NAS is a small business file server, which it does fine with. I only discovered Plex after getting this DS.

Maybe I’m better off keeping my media files on the DS but setting up PMS on another machine. I have a spare Window 10 machine sitting around, it’s older but has an i7 so performance would probably go up quite a bit.

This is out of scope for this question, but do you know if it’s possible to move my library from my NAS to a Windows machine? Not a deal-breaker, but it would be great to keep all my library customization (covers, details, etc), watched flags and sharing. I found a support article but it says moving between OSs is not supported…

You’re obviously far better off using an i7-class processor over the NAS processor. It will run circles around it.

You can move your library. The challenge comes when maintaining the ‘watched’ status. There are procedures for both. If done 100% correctly, it does work. I am a purely Linux operation here so moving from machine to machine is trivial.

Here’s the first article. https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201370363-Move-an-Install-to-Another-System

If you search, you will find ‘moving watched status’ (or similar words). This is a database-based operation.

Great, thanks again for all your help!
