Does PMS Support the lastest DSM Update

DSM 6.0.2-8451
Synology DS216 Play

Hello Everyone,

As above I have DS216 play and I am currently running plex on the above DSM software version. I know plex will not do software or hardware trans-coding so I have converted affected video files to play natively and I have had no issues. I would really like to update to the latest DSM but have read that current updates aren’t supported by Plex and it will stop working.

Can anyone confirm if updated to the latest DSM plex will stop working and if it does can I reset to an earlier supported version?

Any help would be appreciated!

Don’t know where you heard that Plex doesn’t run on DSM 6.2 but it’s wrong.

I’m also running on 6.2.2-24922 and the only issue I have is losing CPU and RAM stats in the dashboard recently (although this issue doesn’t seem to be unique to Synology equipment).

There have been some significant security issues addressed in the DSM releases subsequent to what you’re running (which was released in October 2016!). I’d strongly suggest you keep it up to date, particularly if you’re sharing anything over the Internet.

Thanks ! so no issue running plex on the latest DSM update thats good. Not sure where I heard it but there have seen some threads on other forums (not plex forum) saying that after one of the earlier updates disabled PMS or PMS doesn’t support that latest DSM update.

Ok will update and keep my fingers crossed. Lol

If you can post in those other forums, once you’ve updated, you can show them screenshots.

Did the update to DSM 6.2.2-24922 on my DS918+

Plex will not run. Installs fine, but fails to run. Any advice on how to get it running again?

Please define “will not run” ?

The package fails to start (from Package Center) ?
The server can’t be found when accessing it via web ?

These are two different issues

To confirm is it you can’t find the server or the package won’t run?

What kind Nas do you have? is it a 216 play?

The server is there, but the package won’t run. I’m running a DS918+

I’m thinking I might have to go in and remove Plex manually and reinstall

Let’s do this the fun way

  1. Control Panel - Terminal & SNMP - Enable SSH
  2. Make certain you know the admin user password and the account is enabled (some disable it)
  3. Using putty, or ssh, SSH to the system as user admin
  4. Sign in
  5. sudo -su root (to elevate to root privilege level)
  6. cd "/var/packages/Plex Media Server/scripts"
  7. ./start-stop-status stop
  8. ./start-stop-status start

Using copy/paste from your computer, copy all the output from the window and paste here please.

Nice, I’ve wondering how to stop/start PMS from the cmdline on a Synology :+1:t2:

I followed the instructions as to how to remove PMS through putty and reinstall (from another thread you posted in) and it worked. Then randomly, the package quit running again. Im going to manually uninstall and reinstall again and hopefully it fixes it.

This whole mess started when Plex decided to change how it uses permissions. Hopefully it’s fixed with the latest update.

PMS can be FULLY removed from a Synology via the DSM GUI

  1. Package Center - Plex - Uninstall package
  2. Control Panel - Shared Folders - Plex share - DELETE
  3. Control Panel - Users - Plex - Delete
  4. DSM restart

Any perception the command line is required is incorrect but yes it can be removed via command line.

These statements need further explaining please. Would you clarify?
“It’s broke” doesn’t give me much to go on.

As for the reasons behind the change, They were a LONG time coming.

Even though Plex doesn’t give a roadmap, I can tell you that I am preparing for DSM 7.
These changes are going to happen sooner or later.

I detailed everything, with screenshots and how-to to apply to each share.

I have always been available to call out @chuckpa for help.

What is unclear? It’s the same “Package failed to run” error as before. I’d love to know how to keep it from happening again and again.

This started happening when Plex updated and changed the way it used permissions.

Thanks. You didn’t say it “Failed to run”. I would have asked what I’m asking now:

File Station -> Plex share -> Navigate down until you see Logs.

Right-click Compress to Logs.zip

Attach that ZIP file here

It’s the same thing Plex does when it downloads logs.
