DSM 7 Plex Clean Install - No library scan possible

Hello all,

DSM 7 - Plex Server install was running fine. All shares are accessible according to the install and the shared file permissions for local and system user accounts. are all checked.

Problem is after a clean install that i can add the library to the Plex Server. When i scan the library it scans quickly for 1 second but nothing else happens.

Reinstalled Server, deleted and added permissions again no change. Problem still exists.

Any experience or advise for this issue??

Thank you folks

Did you grant “Sytem Internal User” PlexMediaServer permission to read?

Yes Read and Write to all folders where i have media files located.

Is the media in the default “Video” share?

If so, create a new shared folder of your liking.
Synology reserves Video for their use.

If you’re not using the Video shared folder, please download and attach the logs ZIP here so I can see what’s happening.

Hi again, thanks for the help. So it was not the original folder. It was any folder that existed before the update. Meaning any change in permissions did not get applied.

I created a new folder, applied the permissions as required and copied the movie files over. Within Plex i added the new folder to the library and it started adding the media to Plex Media Server.

So for everyone that has the same problem.

Rename the old folder to e.g. video old. Create a new shared folder with the name video and make sure that the plex media server permissions are applied as described in this forum. Move the media files into the new folder. Add new folder to Plex Library and scan for media files. Do this for every shared folder you have media file in.

This did the trick for me. Seems like there is an issue with user rights and existing folders that are not being applied correctly. I know its a lot of work but it seems like a quick fix.

Let me know if that works for you as well.

Thanks again for the hint!!

Hope that makes sense

DSM 7 should be forward compatible from DSM 6 shared folders.

What is inportant is that:

  1. DSM 6 - we used the username “Plex”
  2. DSM 7 - we now use “PlexMediaServer” which is an Application class account name. (it’s not a real “user” account anymore).

Other than that, Control Panel - Shared folders has always worked for us.

I’m curious what didn’t work for you.

Which DSM build are you using please?

Recommended is: DSM 7.0-41222 or better.

Hi yes i agree it should work and maybe i had an issue before the migration. I upgraded from the latest 6 version to DSM 7.0-41222.

After the migration it all looked good and the PlexMediaServer account name was available as described. But for some reason DSM did not accept the attributes even after multiple attempts taking the user rights away, adding them back again etc.

After recreating new folders all permissions were working as expected.

So maybe as i said must have been a glitch with the existing DSM install already?!?!

That is strange.

Please report that to Synology with the DSM system logs.

They will be interested in seeing what happened and why.

Will do!!
