PMS will not scan my “Music” library when the only Synology folder added to the library is “/volume1/Music”. If I add another folder, “/volume1/TV Shows” say, then the Music library will scan and any music stored there is found.
In other words, with identical music files/folders in both the “/volume1/Music” folder AND the “/volume1/TV Shows” folder, the Music library reports as empty when only the “Music” folder is added to the library, but with only the “TV Shows” folder added to the library, content is shown and plays correctly.
The media is in the required nested file format.
I have tried renaming the shared Music folder to no avail and as far as I can tell, folder permissions are set the same as Movies and TV Shows which scan okay.
Can you confirm the system account used by the Plex Media Server has access to the Music share?
Depending on what version of DSM you’re using, this will be a different user.
DSM7, could not see user “PlexMediaServer”, only “plex”. I tried editing the user name and DSM reported “The user name already exists or is reserved for system use.”
That was the clue…PlexMediaServer is a System internal user. So, editing the shared Music folder, select Permissions, there is a dropdown box at the top which defaults to Local Users. Select System internal user and then PlexMediaServer. I chose Custom and afforded full control by ticking all the boxes.
I migrated to DSM7 before I had any music added to Plex, so I guess this is why Music folder permissions did not automatically migrate.
Now to copy a squillion CD’s!
Thanks for your help Tom, it pointed me in the right direction.
