DTS 5.1

Hi.
I have a problem with getting sound on my sonos when i see movies on my samsung UE55H8005 though plex on my tv and the movie is in DTS 5.1 there will be no sound. The tv is connected to sonos through optical cable. All other sounds channels are working but not when its DTS 5.1.
Ant one have a solution on this ?

You can’t pass DTS via optical. You need to use HDMI.

but i cant connect sonos with hdmi, so how i do ???

You can’t. The DTS should be transcoding if your bar can’t support it.

I can confirm that DTS does absolutely downmix into Dolby Digital 5.1 via Plex, I have a Sonos 5.1 setup and use an Apple Tv (4th Gen). You can go into the Sonos app settings and it advises what sound format is being received during playback.

I do use an optical switch which my Tivo and Apple Tv plug into to then feed the Playbar but that shouldn’t matter.

I cant find the place in my sonos app to change that setting, can you help me ?

It’s not a Sonos setting to change, I simply mean if you go into Settings - About my Sonos system - you will see what format is actually being received by your speaker. I used this while testing DTS downmixing to ensure I was receiving Dolby digital 5.1 and not stereo (virtual surround) as there’s a big difference in quality.

It said stereo , can i do anything to change that ?

I doubt it as optical can’t handle DTS at all so you’re probably screwed if you can’t use HDMI.

Not necessarily, like I said in my post above I have this working fine via Sonos and optical, the Sonos doesn’t support DTS (known) but Plex will downmix to Dolby Digital 5.1 for a fact. Now this may depend on a few factors…

Some Tv’s don’t play nice with optical and DTS /5.1 handover, that’s why I introduced an optical switch so each optical connection is independent to the playbar. A HTPC optical to swicth, Apple tv optical to switch and Tivo optical to switch then output to playbar.

When I play a Dolby Digital 5.1 movie it reports in Sonos app as being received in DD 5.1, when I play DTS file Plex converts the audio element of the container and Sonos receives Dolby Digital 5.1.

Another great tool to help show you what is being played/transcoded in real-time is PlexPy (not official Plex software as developed by a forum member who Plex subsequently hired). Check out the thread below as a LOT of people use this daily to monitor performance and gather analytics.

https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/169591/plexpy-another-plex-monitoring-program/p1

For example you can see when a movie is being played which elements of the file are being direct played/transcoded. In my example above a DTS file could direct play the video but transcode the audio.

■■■■, sorry to say, but its a bit difficult for me to understand how i should connect all this :frowning:
but i get a better understanding why it not Works here

What device do you use to play Plex? (HTPC / Apple Tv/ Roku / Amazon Firestick etc)

There are different settings on each device, most work by default but sometimes you have to tweak settings if you are using a HTPC (Plex Home Theatre / Plex Media Player).

Also, when you play a standard Dolby Digital 5.1 movie, does the Sonos app report Dolby Digital 5.1 being received?

I use the plex app on my samsung tv, no other problems with movies in other soundformat.
Start the plex app on tv and then plex is connected to my map with movies on my laptop.

If i run plex from my laptop through Google crome cast there is no problem with movies in dts , so it seems like a problem with my samsung tv or ???

The Samsung platform doesn’t support DTS passthrough by an app.

So can you confirm that the Sonos app receives DD 5.1 when playing a Dolby Digital movie.
I should have asked (rather than assume) you do have the rear Sonos speakers to create a surround environment ? (you don’t need the Sub to create the 5.1 although it does sound great:-)

I can’r really comment on the Samsung tv App as I have never used, I may be wrong but I was under the impression that was developed by a forum member (rather than Plex team). Would be interesting to see what results you get using a different player as a test

i just check a movie with dolby 5.1 and it said dolby digital 5.1 on my sonos app.
You use the app on your apple tv ??

I use the Plex app on the apple tv to connect to my content, the Sonos always reports DD 5.1 when I am watching movies.

But that is only on the new apple tv there is a plex app ? i check my old one out last night and couldent see any plex or how to update the app list on apple tv.
I found out that if i run a dts movie on my tv, i can go into settings and it shows its a dts format, then i can change it to pcm and get sound. Byt pcm is only 2 channel sound ??
