So with the plex pass on offer I was tempted to look at it again. The xbox app seems to be getting closer as a player I could actually use. But since 90% of my library is in dts and dts-ma I never play anything with plex. My “server” cant transcode anything due to it being very weak so the xbox one x so be able to handle it. But with all the progress being made in other areas I would like to hear - what is the status and/or plans on dts and dts-ma?
There currently isn’t any. Because the system is closed, Plex must wait for Microsoft to add support for any additional codecs. Once the platform framework is able to support DTS (It currently does not support any form of DTS for 3rd party playback) the update to the app can be done really quickly to support these codecs.
Is it likely that Plex will give up on the platform decoder and just use their own decoder? I understand the benefit of using the platform, but it seems like it’s been long enough waiting for it to do what we need it to and it’s time to give up.
Based on my experience with platforms in the past, I would say it doesn’t seem very likely that they would switch over.
In my opinion, what the next step would be would actually be working on getting audio passthrough to work. While this won’t solve 100% of the issues, it would provide a simple alternative for most users to work past the decoding limitations on the platform.
But I do not have access to the development timeline, so that is just my guess on what would be likely to happen out of the options.
