Goodmorning @BigWheel. I was wondering if there is an update to my case? Can I do something from my end to help? Its been almost a month since I made this thread and while there were some updates to both the player and PMS, its still transcoding.
I get the feeling that it is an isolated issue because nobody else has been reporting it. And you said when I first posted that there was no issue on your setup. I don’t know if there was a soundbar or something involved in order to work at your end without transcoding.
Thanks for replying! No problem. I thought because it has been a while since I got the last update maybe there was something new. I will wait then
If I can do anything at all or if you need to know something please ask! It is doable at the moment but when more users are connecting to my shieldserver the shield keeps buffering when in the past it was no issue because it was never transcoding.
Just downloaded the new PMS update for Shield. Nothing new unfortunately. Thanks again for replying! I appreciate that because I know that it is still being investigated.
I am having a similar, kind of related problem. I have noticed that any movie with DTS-HD audio tracks that are 7.1 are only playing at 5.1. Any movie with a Dolby/ATMOS 7.1 audio plays fine. I know this did work before I did one of the last updates on the Nvidia Shield.
Thanks for sharing! What is your setup? Are you using a soundbar? In my situation I cant play anything anymore without transcoding. No soundbar, just Shield → HDMI → TV. Always worked (5.1/7.1 no problem). I also think that an update to either the Plex app or Nvidia Shield is the problem.
But in your case only DTS-HD 7.1 are transcoding to 5.1? In my case it does not matter (DTS, DTS-HD, Dolby Digital, AC3) nothing plays correctly anymore
They are still working on it/figuring out the problem so they say. Just waiting I guess nothing I can do.
I have the Nvidia Shield TV (the tube one) hooked up to a Yamaha RX-V683BL. In my case it doesnt look like it is transcoding it from 7.1 to 5.1. when i look on the server it says it is doing a direct play at 7.1. but the receiver is only putting out 5.1 when watching a movie with DTS-HD 7.1. however Dolby/ATMOS 7.1 play fine.
Ah ok. I have the 2017 shield pro myself. So the server is telling you its playing as it should be with 7.1 audio but the receiver sends out 5.1 when it could handle 7.1 hmm strange that atmos is an exception. You should think that the yamaha handles all the audio the same. I hope the developers are looking at the issue. So far you are the first user with a similar problem.
With all the shields out there you should think that more people have the same problems. Strange.
I thought it was strange there were not more reports of this issue as well. I think it has something to do with one of the last updates on the shield. As the problem is still there when I roll back the plex server
I did not tried to roll back to a previous plex server update because then I will have to start all over. Thanks for trying! So its a shield update then whats causing this. Lets hope the Plex team can figure it out quick and resolve this. Very strange its just the two of us. The guy that replied to me @BigWheel is from Plex and he has a shield too. Even he has no issues with his setup. Weird
So, last night I found answer to the issue I was having with DTS 7.1, user error, or more to the point speaker setup error. Before I had my surround sound speakers set up in a 7.1 setup, but noticed that my two presence speakers were not producing sound. So I set the speakers up in a 5.1.2 set up. This worked for Dolby Atmos, and DTS 7.1 that was on a 4K, but not a 1080P. Last night I read that my receiver can support both a 7.1 and 5.1.2 set up at the same time, just two of the speakers will not be active if the audio track does not support it. So, looks like I just need to install two more speakers and all should be good on my end.
I thought my receiver had to be set up as one or the other. Guess it pays to read the fine print in the manual. Now I have a project to do one of the days I am off work next week!
Hey man good for you that you found your answer! I had never heard of a 5.1.2 set up myself either.
Now that I am here anyway:
At my end things seems to be working again. I had received a new Nvidia Experience update version 8.2.1 I thought it was installed automaticly but there was this update waiting apparantly. Its an update from november 17. I have installed it and I was hopeful because in the description it said:
Fixes bug where audio would randomly drop, requiring a reboot to recover
Resolves issue where manually enabling AC3 in “Available formats” was not working as advertised
Fixes NETFLIX issue where 5.1 audio would not be available after disconnecting bluetooth speaker
So I thought thats interesting. However after installing it was still transcoding.
I turned off (at audioformats) automatic and set it to manual and enabled AC3, DTS the whole gang. I checked again with The Mule (2018) AND IT DIRECT PLAYED!!! I did this 2 months ago in the same way but nothing. So probarly the update was the fix.
But new question: Before all of this everything worked as it should be without configuring audioformats to manual.
Its great that it works now but is this the “correct” way to let it work? Or is it supposed to work without setting it to manual. Because that was the way it was set before I started having problems if you know what I mean😅.
@BigWheel
Ah then there is something wrong with my shield I guess. It was working until an update I think and I have tried the previous things but it did not work. Now with the new update I thought I give it a shot and holy s… it works haha Apparantly thats the way it is now with manual. My TV is a non-smart one so the only device thats detecting anything is the Shield I guess.
