Dual Subtitle Support

What I would really like to see is the ability for automatic switching of subtitles and dual subtitle support.

Let me give an example: “Wasp Network”. Here we have a movie that is spoken in Spanish, English and sometimes Russian. I speak two languages, Bad English and Bad Spanish. My wife speaks Chami (native south american Indian) and Bad Spanish. It would be great if you could choose two subtitle languages instead of one and have Plex either automatically switch between the two on the fly or at the very least show both if automatic selection is not possible. This way when they are talking in English it would show Spanish subs for my wife and then when they are speaking in Spanish is would show English subs for me and then when they are speaking in Russian it could show English and Spanish subs at the same time, perhaps one at the top and one at the bottom of the screen?

Mod-Edit: moved to feature suggestion category; dropped the section below (duplicate suggestion)
Also it would be nice if you could choose to set the subs outside of the video frame from 2.35:1 movies so as to not block as much of the image (on Shield TV at least).

How would Plex know what language is spoken based on audio?

That’s definitely more of a tricky one.
It might work in some way with text-based subtitles if you have the forced subtitles for each language you want to support…

  • “English” forced subtitle track will display when spoken language is Spanish or Russian
  • “Spanish” forced subtitle track will display when spoken language is English or Russian

Such a feature would be limited to 2 languages (1 atop the movie, 1 below) – and it’ll be a pain for non-letterboxed content as subtitles will eat 2x the space from your content. Image based subtitles from DVD/Blu-Rays won’t work as they can place their subtitles all over the screen (same for formatted subtitles like ASS).

While I see where you’re coming from, this seems more of a far stretch to be implemented (e.g. because of the selective use cases it can be applied to; but I’m not the judge of that  )
If you’re working with SRTs you could use some available SRT Merger app to achieve what you’re looking for (there’s even some web apps doing this – just google merging SRT subtitles).

There’s already an existing feature suggestion for placing subtitles outside the video for letterboxed content (e.g. 21:9 content on 16:9 display)

Thanks for the reply Tom. Yes, I have used SRT Merger app and while it works just fine on the Plex desktop app and on my Plex cellphone app, for some reason it does not work on the Shield Android TV app? Of course the Shield is the most important as that is connected to my FP in my living room where the wife and I watch 99.9 % of our movies/series on the 105" screen on the wall.
