Let us position srt subtitles to bottom of video

Right now Plex displays SRT subtitles to the bottom of the display, rather than the bottom of the video. On a normal display like a tv, subtitles would appear in the black bar in letterbox content, which I personally do not prefer since it involves more eye movement.

The biggest issue is if you watch on a 3:2 aspect ratio like a tablet, subtitles appear MUCH lower. A simple solution would be to allow an option to display subtitles on bottom of video instead of bottom of display.

I’ve seen some posts talking about this before but they seem to be old and dead. But there are a lot of people complaining about this so please give us this option!

Whereas I’d rather shift the video up, so there is no black bar at the top, but the subtitles are entirely in the bar below.

I agree 100%. Everybody with a cinemascope (1 : 2.35) projector screen knows about this problem. The subtitles are outside of the screen then.

Infuse has at least a feature to vertically move the subtitles freely. This would be an alternative, maybe simpler to implement.

I’ve actually found out srt subs support some kind of positioning where you define X1 X2 Y1 Y2 next to the time stamp. This forum shows how. https://www.visualsubsync.org/help/srt

Plex player for windows supports it actually. So it would be nice if other clients support it too

I forgot to mention I did find a work around to make the subtitles appear on top of the black bar. Basically just put a non-breaking space on a new line under each subtitle. It makes it look like the subs are on the video instead of on the black bar.

So far my workaround for this has been to force my client to burn in the subtitles, that moves them into the video frame. But it’s not ideal, since SRT subtitles end up too small imo

Well if your transcoding anyways, might as well use .ass subs so you can define font, color, and positions so you won’t have that problem

Are there any decent sources for ass subtitles? I rarely see them on Opensubtitles, especially not for content that isn’t anime

You could use a program Aegisub to convert your .srt to .ass and define font, color and margins in there.

How exactly were you able to do it? Were you using any program which can add line under each sub?

Also 100% agree with this request, cannot believe this still isn’t in Plex

Any update on this from the devs?

Sorry for the late response, I used a text editor to replace every new line with the non break space plus new line. But tbh now that all the devices I use natively support pgs subs I just use that for everything as it’s less of a hassle to just use the subs that came with the blu ray vs customizing each one.

Cinemascope PJ user and yes, I want this feature. The PGS subs work fine but the srt are dragged below the picture (and in my case below the screen)

+1
The subtitles should be over the actual image instead of below the image and over the black bar, which is extremely annoying. It requires way too much eye movement, which ruins the viewing experience.

I vote for this as well.

Only problem is that some releases come with black bars in the video. They aren’t cut out.
So having the option Bottom of Video and an option to just shift subtitles up/down, that would be amazing.

Why is this still not a thing?
Subtitles on the black bars are extremely annoying on a MiniLed Tv, as it causes the
backlight to flicker.
Thinking of moving to Kodi, as it has the support for it.

Honestly I can understand that Plex just couldn’t think of the most elegant solution. When I first made the feature request I didn’t realize rips come with the black bar area, so just saying to put subtitles at bottom of video instead of display wouldn’t solve it for all cases. Then there’s the issue with phones being a slimmer aspect ratio. You don’t want the subtitles to disappear when you use pinch to zoom for example.

So probably the best thing would be to do what Infuse does, which is for each movie have a +2 +1 0 -1 -2 type option to move the subs.

Same here. Has there been a fix for this yet?

Bump…

Hi there ! I’de like the same feature to be added. I’m using Plex on Nvidia Shield.

Is there a way to “vote” (apart from voting for this topic) for features.
I’m even willingly to pay for Plex pass for this.
Thanks !
