Duplicate Server

Server Version#: Version 1.40.4.8679

Weird issue that started, not sure if it was coincidentally or because of it, but around the same time I switched ISPs a couple weeks ago. The day after switching my server was unavailable. I restarted the server and my Plex instance seemingly got wiped out and had a fresh instance with no media. Fast forward a few days and I have duplicate servers listed, one with version 1.40.4.8679 (original working instance) and one with 1.40.4.855x (fresh instance, cant remember exact version number but it was a bit older). Fresh copy is listed as unavailable. I remove the fresh copy and all was good for several days. After about a week, same story. Original server is unavailable and fresh server is showing up as nearby. I have to restart the service several times to get my original server back up and running. I removed the fresh instance from authorized devices and when the original server is running, the fresh copy no longer shows up anywhere, but when the fresh server shows up as nearby, the original shows up as unavailable. Seems like i have two instances on the server and its flipping back and forth but i am unsure where to check for that or how to proceed, not versed well enough in linux unfortunately. Also to note, i have my linux server set to auto reboot nightly, that seems to spark when it flip flops between the two instances. Any help would be great so i dont have to keep checking my server each day to make sure its up and running.

TIA

I am no Linux expert, but here is something you could try:

(Attention: the following will invalidate all media shares you may have created previously. Afterward you will need to edit each of your shared users and re-grant them access to your new server instance.)

Remove both server instances from your user account: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms
Re-claim your server.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/

Only thing I’m worried about if i remove both is if my entire library will need to be re-added once i claim it and i wind up having to match and fix match all the movies that have issues.

No, the claiming of your server into a user account has nothing to do with your library data.

Thanks, I tried it today and claimed the original server. Will monitor and see what happens over the next few days.

Rebooted server and same story. Original server is unavailable and have old version (1.40.3.8555) server available as nearby. Not sure what other options I have to remove the second copy, wherever its coming from.

Then this server is running somewhere in the network or on this machine. It might be unclaimed or configured to not require authentication.

A server with version number 1.40.4 is actually connected to the user account that you are using to write in this here forum.
So it should appear in a web browser that is signed into the same plex user account, provided it is in the same local network as the server. Use of Docker or VMs could throw a spanner in there.

I did just notice this in the servers list after claiming the nearby server with the older version. I assume the “snap” is the issue. How do i get rid of that?

plexOS

1.40.3.8555-fef15d30c
Plex Media Server
snap
Linux 22.04.4 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)

plexOS

1.40.4.8679-424562606
Plex Media Server
PC
Linux 22.04.4 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)

I cannot tell you. I only know that snap is a way of packaging and deploying apps on Linux.
I guess you need to un-deploy it via the snap commands – whatever they are.
I am no Linux expert.

So I uninstalled it using command “sudo snap remove plexmediaserver” and it looks like that did it. Everything seems to be good after several reboots. Will see how it goes. I am not sure where the “snap” even came from.

Just seeing this now…

Check in /var/snap to ensure you didn’t get the default snapshot (backup) of the PMS server as you removed it (what snap does by default). Full removal is:
sudo snap remove --purge plexmediaserver

Yes, i did that.

Thanks!
