DVD vs Aired Order

I have a hopefully a quick and easy question that I am hoping someone can help me out with. I have been using Plex for a few years now and have double-checked that my files are name correctly. I have recently added Pinky And The Brain to my plex server but it is showing it by aired order. I have named them per TVDB by DVD order. I have pointed Plex to where I have them saved and it shows all the episodes. I went to the little pencil and went to advanced. I then changed the order from aired to DVD order. From the home tab on the left I click the 3 dots went to manage library and picked refresh all metadata. This did not work, so I tried the 3 dots under the main box art picture and tried refresh metadata as well as fix match and neither of those worked either. Is there a step that I am missing? If I change it absolute numbering it does change it to that though. Any help would be great and thank you in advance.

I am curious about this too, I just discovered my Firefly series is now sorted by aired order rather than DVD order which is the correct chronological order. This seems to be the default order which Plex acquires the metadata. I checked in The Agents settings but there seems to be no way to change this. So I had to manually re-number and rename each episode. Luckily Firefly is only 14 episodes. I’m afraid to go into a big TV series and have to go through and re-order everything.
Hopefully there is an option for those who want it in a different order then what is default.

@nice1stu - @bwayne32 described what should be the correct procedure. You can edit the show (not the season) to specify a different order. If you really want to make Firefly appear in DVD order, that should be how to accomplish it.

@bwayne32’s problem with P&TB sounds different, and I don’t have a good suggestion for him. It’s weird that Aired and Absolute ordering have an influence, but DVD ordering doesn’t.

Maybe something is wrong. There’s a complaint about things not working as expected for Futurama, too.

Thanks guys, I managed to make it work based on the instructions by bwayne32. Unfortunately with my limited knowledge, I can’t really add anything constructive to this discussion, but did want to say thanks. Good luck figuring it out.

DVD Order, particular FireFly:

You name your episodes in the DVD Order - and note that there is more than one ‘UnOfficial’ Alternate Order, and, of course, TVDB only knows one. Fortunately, it’s the right one.

Anyway, the DVD Order Feature doesn’t do anything more than go and get the corrrect info for the out of whack episode you’re requesting. The Feature doesn’t actually rename your episodes. That could be a source of combustion/confusion.

I think I have figured out my problem but do not know what to do about it. I have noticed that the episodes with multi-titles are giving me the problem. Some of the episodes have 2 cartoons in them and have a / between the names. I can’t use / because Windows won’t let me because it is not allowed. I have named them both with just a space between the titles and a dash and neither worked. I am going to try to rename some with just the first one and see what happens.

Plex is not considering the optional episode title when matching your episodes. Just the show name and sXXeYY pattern.

The way I have them named are like this…Pinky and the Brain - s01e01 - Da Mouse or for then one it is like this Pinky And The Brain - s01e03 - Tokyo Grows That Smarts Brainstem. The second one is one that has more than 1 cartoon per episode and on TVDB instead of the space between each title is named. Toko Grow / That Smarts / Brainstem. I have just tried the Pinky And The Brain s01e03 and that does not work either. Under DVD Order episode 8 is A Pinky And The Brain Christmas and it is episode 12 under Aired Order. When I follow the correct steps to show the DVD Order in Plex it shows both 8 & 12 as that same title. Under DVD order episode 12 is one of the multi title episodes like the example above for episode 3. Also, under Aired Order there are 19 episodes for season 1 and DVD Order list 22. Under DVD Order there are not titles for the final 3 episodes they just say episode 20, 21, 22.
