Pulling DVD order vs Aired order from TheTVDB

Is there a way Plex can pull the DVD order from the TVDB instead of the Aired Order? I ask this because the Aired order for a show like Firefly is completely different from the order on the DVD, and the DVD order is what the Showrunners actually wanted.

Yes, this is possible. But only if the show doesn’t have ā€œdouble episodesā€ in DVD order.
As soon as version numbers like 2.1 and 2.2 appear on TheTVDB, this ceases to work.

But it does work for Firefly.

Afterwards, Refresh Metadata for Firefly.
You might have to manually select different pictures for the episodes, these are still by default from the Aired order. (Known bug).

Thank You! The thing I forgot to do was refresh the Metadata…

So I’m sure this has been answered somewhere else, but if TVDB does have ā€œdouble episodesā€ that are different from the airing order vs the DVD order, there’s no way to scrape the DVD ordering? The show I’m referring to is Night Gallery, and as OCD as I am about organization, I really don’t think I want to split 98 episodes apart and then stitch them correctly for ā€œairing orderā€ā€¦

Im not seeing the advanced option.

the tvdb changed their web ui a while back, the dvd order is currently not displayed on their website.

you should still be able to set the dvd order in plex on the series advanced options.

click the series name in plex, then EDIT (you may have to click the 3 dots menu), then click advanced.

there is a picture posted just above by Otto

Plex will not fix the episode order automatically. If you select the DVD order, you have to fix the file names so the episode number matches the DVD order, not the airing order.

For example:
Show Name S01E05 Episode Aired as 5 but DVD order is 10
needs to be renamed as
Show Name S01E10 Episode Aired as 5 but DVD order is 10

@OttoKerner These instructions worked great for me!

Thanks!

Awesome! Ran into this with The Muppets - this fixed it!
From Wiki
There is no set broadcast order for the episodes, as they were shown in varying order in different region For the Series One DVD box set that was released in 2005 placed the episodes in the order in which they were produced, rather than aired, for this reason.

Hey, it appears that Plex’s latest updates have either removed this option or I hope just moved it? Could anyone tell me where it is now if it is anywhere?

It’s still there.
But you must make sure that you are on the top level of the show. It won’t work if you edit only a season or an episode.

@OttoKerner Thank you! I genuinely don’t know how I missed this!

@OttoKerner I had trouble getting the DVD order to work with Terra Nova https://www.thetvdb.com/series/terra-nova/seasons/dvd/1, is that because of first episode (1.1, 1.2) was a double ?

Honestly, I don’t know. TheTVDB doesn’t show these 1.1 and 1.2. episode numbers anymore anywhere on their website, so checking for them is difficult.

When I look at the ā€˜modified’ date there, I have a hunch that this is yet another issue caused by their recent flurry of series ā€œre-organizationsā€. So let’s hope that this will settle, once all the caches have been flushed.

Is this ā€œDVD Orderā€ Option still available anywhere? (May2020)
I’m having a rough time trying to get the right metadata for my Seinfeld: The Complete Series boxset. Every thread I can find that addresses the problem leans on this option, and I can’t seem to find it.

Yes, it’s still there.
Key is to go to the ā€œtop levelā€ of the show, i.e. you must not be in a season or an episode preplay
Then you edit the show and go to the ā€˜Advanced’ tab.

You might have to reload the web app (F5) prior to this, if the Advanced tab is inaccessible.

Thanks for your swift reply!
The ā€˜Advanced’ tab is available, but the dvdorder option is not available.

I guess I’m confused by what you mean by top level. Whether I look at ā€œā€¦ > Edit > Advancedā€ from the pinned location, the ā€˜top’ of the library (before entering the series), or from the ā€œLibrariesā€ list in settings I don’t have the same options as pictured above.

(I did reload as you suggested)

You don’t edit the library. You edit the show.
Please show me a screenshot.

That was the distinction I needed!
Attached is a screenshot that shows where to access those options.
On the show page only, the pencil ā€˜edit’ icon in the top-right leads to the correct window.

I had been looking through every ā€œā€¦ā€ menu anywhere it appeared to no avail.

Seriously – thank you – you just saved me hours or renaming files.
