DVDs ripped with MakeMKV

Hi,

I have a bunch of DVDs I ripped using MakeMKV, but plex media serve doesn’t seem to detect the audio and subtitles. I typically rip the video with 1 or 2 audio tracks and 1 subtitle track (dutch).
If I add these .mkv files to PMS, they show up OK, but both Audio and Subtitles is always set to None.
However, if I play these files with PHT, audio is played ok, and subtitles are shown/selectable.
So apparently PHT can detect those tracks, while PMS somehow can’t.
Video is of course MPEG2, audio is mostly AC3, subtitles are VobSub.

While play back is OK, it sometimes is a hassle as PMS never remembers what audio track or subtitle you selected (for some movies I have both English and Dutch audio), so you need to reselect everytime you start/continue watching.

Any ideas?

Looking at a file with mkvinfo (from MKVToolNix), all tracks show up with the expected info.

My setup: PMS running on Synology NAS, PHT running on an Intel NUC with Win8.1 (so no transcoding needed whatsoever).

Probably to do with the default language selected in the settings of PMS. Take a look.

This type of error sounds like your version of PMS is really old.

Try remuxing the files with mkvmerge. Verify, the track language tags are set properly. If there are ‘Global tags’ shown in the track list, disable them before muxing.

My PMS version is 0.9.12.3, so I don’t think that’s really old.
My default language selection seems OK.
The problem really seems to be that the PMS doesn’t find the audio and subtitle tracks for some reason, so it shows ‘None’ in the web interface; while PHT does find them and lets you select them.
Which is odd, since the files seem entirely OK.

What about the second part of my post above?

https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
inspect the file with this, then post the result of ‘File’ - Export - Text (tick ‘Advanced mode’)

That was released in early June, so in terms of PMS that is old. Also considering we are now upto 0.9.12.12 for PlexPass and 0.9.12.11 for public.

Installed 0.9.12.12 and re-analyzed one such file: no luck…
Remuxing with mkvmerge doesn’t seem to help either.

This is the ouput from MediaInfo:

Looks pretty ordinary.
So I think either a bundle reset is due
( Media-Flags.bundle and LocalMedia.bundle I think)

OR

a clean install of a newer version of PMS.

Tried removing the package and installing it again (keeping my DB and settings), but no luck.
If I find the time, I’ll try installing the PMS on my PC and add one of those files and see what happens.

Please follow my “super duper” thorough way of deinstalling/reinstalling Plex Server.

The extra step about the “Plugins” folder on the bottom is absolutely necessary in your case.

Haven’t had time to try your “super duper”, yet, but installed the PMS on my Win7 PC, and added one such file, and there it works!
So could be linux(NAS) vs Windows related, but I also noticed something interesting in the Scanner.log files: the one on my PC seems to give a complete log with ffmpeg saying ‘All info found’, while the one on my NAS seems to be truncated halfway (in the midst of some ‘palette’ entries), as if ffmpeg bailed out/crashed/hung…
Maybe I’ll need that “super duper” indeed…
to be continued!

The super-duper mainly applies to Windows.
The extra step can be translated to Linux, if you are able to determine the location of the plex data/plugin folder vs the plex program folder.

I did a fresh install on my NAS this weekend with the 0.9.12.12, but still the same issue!
I have a sneaky suspicion the VobSub subtitles are somehow involved, so I might try remuxing a file without and see if it makes any difference…

For those interested: this has been solved in one of the recent PMS updates!
